Nah, that won't be a big problem. You can overclock a GPU regardless of the Motherboard too.

motherboards dont directly impact performance. And an i3 will do fine with that GPU, however in some games, like battelefield 4, there will be some bottlenecking

Depends on the game. In some more demanding titles like Battlefield 4 and GTA V an i3 will bottleneck mid range AMD GPUs... my friend's system with i3-4150 and R9 270 has bottlenecking in the aforementioned games. Meanwhile most other games run beautifully. Generally I'd suggest going with an Nvidia GPU if you can't afford an i5 CPU, as Nvidia's GPUs run a bit better on low end CPUs (their drivers are more efficient in terms of CPU usage in DirectX 11 than AMD's).

 

For example in BF3, BF4, and GTA V my friend with i3-4150 + GTX 560 gets better fps than the i3-4150 + R9 270, even though the R9 270 is a better card.

Agree except,for the Nvidia part. 380 is better then the 960, no denying it. Even if it's now at some point he will probably upgrade.

Not sure why you're bringing that up... of course the 380 is better than the GTX 960, I never mentioned these cards... but if you have a weak CPU in demanding games AMD cards aren't going to perform very well and will be surpassed easily by weaker Nvidia cards.

 

Like I said, both my friends I built systems for use the i3-4150. one with my old GTX 560 and one with the R9 270... in demanding titles (BF3, BF4, GTA V) the system with the GTX 560 performs noticeably better, even though the R9 270 is a much better card... the R9 270 should perform about 25% better

Unless Mantle (BF4) comes into play though - then it's a slightly different story.

Yes, I would use MSI afterburner to overclock gpu.

I have not for the life of me been able to get it working on my friend's R9 270 system. Tried on numerous different driver versions and every time Mantle is enabled in BF4 he gets massive stuttering and memory leak issues.

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is it's not a big issue though, he still gets 45+ fps which is fine for him... he comes from playing on Xbox 360 so he's used to like 24 fps battlefield lol.

i had the same problem back when i was using mantle on HD7950 which is a 3GB card i was still running out of VRAM after about 1 minute the game become unplayable stuttering mess...i think you need a 4GB card to run decent settings on mantle BF4.

I've seen people run it on YouTube on R9 270X 2GB and stuff... maybe Mantle was broken with newer drivers or game updates. I seem to recall 14.11 was where Mantle functionality in BF4 was at its best... but I could be mistaken. But not gonna use 14.11 for my friend just for Mantle since he'd lose performance on some more recent titles

Only if you play call of duty or some other game that is pro-cores...

 

Mostly you should be fine even 860K is a good match for a R9 380!
