Overclock Or Not to Overclock

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

@don_svetlio Im not gonna overclock my cpu even if I have a k series,I want my warrant but on the other hand so there is not much improvements on overclocking the gpu itself if I can keep my 60 fps, maybe once I get my 1440p monito perhaps

980 Ti can do 60 fps @ 1440p even @ stock clocks. Unless you want extra fps - then not really.

CPU OCing doesn't void warranties :o

@everyone else - his current power draw is about 120W bellow the rating of the PSU - which is good mind you - so an OC won't kill anything.

I've been thinking for awhile if I should overclock my gpu since I've been seeing improvements on benchmark and games. Though not sure if my psu is sufficient though my cpu is at stock and not overclockable since its not a k series. But overclocking gpu alone, can it yield improve performance or I should just leave it at stock speed? Also I do have a gtx 980ti msi gaming 6g and a 520w Antec HCG psu

Not with puny PSU. I wouldn't risk it.

You're currently pulling about 350-400W from the PSU - no issues therE
GPU OC won't really make too big of a difference currently - you are well above 60 fps
CPU non-K OC is a bad idea.

I'll probably replace my psu with a ax psu from corsair soon. Just in case I would oc my components

Corsair are overpriced - get a SeaSonic/EVGA/Antec/Super Flower

@don_svetlio ohh really? Sorry didn't know that. Cuz I thought messing around with the cpu mightve void the warranty like when I messed around and bend my and cpu pin cuz I was fiddling with it cost my warranty :((

Also I might buy a similar psu to your main rig :). And i5 4590 is my cpu too :)))

Bending pins is a different story - that's ill advised. OCing is for K-chips and for Z-boards.

Wat? no >.<

970 and 390 have almost identical power draw (not TDP - google it) - both coupled with an i5 will draw about 350W.

excluding an ssd this is what the power consumption would be with a 4460, dno what ur cpu is but i guessed something like a 4460

I have a i5 4590 cpu :).

you would have around 100 watts left if you had a pc like this with an ssd.

i chose the ssd as thats the one i have, was just a guess, they only use a whopping 5 watts.

people think systems draw more power than they do, i bet my system hardly pulls anywhere near what it says it does.

Power draw is over exaggerated big time - mainly people who believe that AMD cards pull 25 KiloWatts and Nvidia pull 25 Watts :D - But I don't want to start a brand war. Just sayin ^_^

yeah i do see people taking the micky with amd, theyre not that bad, at the end of the day id rather spend a couple more pennies on power and have a better gpu, people who would rather save a few pennies and have a lesser  gpu are silly.

Like Linus says - get the better priced option.

Expecting 35W less power draw to save you a large sum of money is really not possible - mainly since you don't run the GPU @ 100% load all the time - chances are you game less than 4 hours daily and during the rest of the time the GPU pulls about 80 or so Watts - be it AMD or Nvidia - hell - AMD even turn the GPU off completely when the system shuts the display off.

exactly, i just worked out how much my pc would use at 300 watts for 8 hours all year long and it worked out at only £87 which is nothing.
