SD Card Won't Work in Camera

All the information I have is that any time my mother takes the SD card from her Nikon D90 to offload pictures on her ASUS laptop, then puts it back into the camera, the card refuses to work. Every single time. Any idea what would cause the issue?

Corruption, scratched/damaged, or one device did something to it.

Highly doubting the scratched/damaged. We just took a card out if the packaging, inspected it, took a picture, then offloaded. Won't work.

I'm leaning more towards a file system error of sorts, mom swears that the camera uses a file system that you can't format to on a computer (I call bullshit, but not in the mood to argue with her), and that you MUST use the camera to format a card.

Camera won't even recognize the card, so it cannot be formatted on the camera.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Lexar, SanDisk, Patriot. A mix of those brands in 4-32GB capacities. Not sure how many cards she has, honestly just made the thread because I'm sick of her complaining about it and couldn't find a solution on my own in the last half hour.

The HP, Toshiba, and my desktop don't affect it, however, she needs the ASUS for Lightroom, and for some reason, is refusing to offload on one computer, then transfer over via flash drive. She wants to plug the card it, offload and edit, then unplug and be ready to shoot again, without compromise.

All of them are internal. We don't have an external accessible at the moment either. We will tomorrow evening, however.

This is very odd.

 

My friend's D90 never does this whenever we work. Laptop must be altering the format of the card. Can you identify the SD card's format in another computer after dumping files in the Asus?

Maybe a silly question,but did you remove it safely by detaching it first from the os?

You can format a memory card for a camera on a computer, format it as FAT32.  That's what most cameras use.

 

Do a full format on the camera, take a few photos, try to download the photos onto the Asus, and see if the card still reads on the camera.

 

Another test: take a Sandisk SD card that you have, format it to FAT32 on another computer. Upload some files, put the card in the Asus, right click on the card to open it's properties.  Check that it is still FAT32, and that you can read the files.  Then take the card back to the first computer, see if it still reads and still FAT32.

 

Check to make sure the computer is up to date with the proper drivers, no malware or virus infecting the machine, test with an external card reader to see if the computer alters the card in anyway.

 

By the way, what brand is the card?  Certain brands like Kingston do not play well with Nikon cameras.  Sometimes they work for a while, then stop working and have to be reformatted, battery has to be removed and put back in, etc.
