I'd recommend sticking with what you have if that is your target for upgrade.  Save up for a i5/i7/Xeon Skylake instead.  It'll serve you far better and allow for SLI + a PCI-E SSD.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

and what about AMD FX-6300 or Intel i3-4170 ?

and the pentuim will downgrade the performance ?

I have a 6300, and it's good but you might want an 8350

8320 is way better value/money.

that will be a downgrade from his sandy i5.

he already has a topic he got answers http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/443454-my-cpu-vs-new-one/

it seems that he doesnt care about cpu he just wants a new mobo. so get whatever fits your budget the only upgrade would be an i5 hawell/skylake

wait a few days for i3 6100 and i5 6400 and get whichever you afford. 1151 motherboards have more features if thats what you want

And who are you? If you have something to say, say it. But don't act like an asshole just for the sake of being an asshole.

I act like an asshole because everyone is like "yeah i3 is better fx 6300 is better fx 8320 is better" while they're not.

You're acting like an asshole by telling people to shut the fuck up.

Yes, because you're spreading FALSE information.

OP, the next step up from your current i5-2400 is another core i5 or core i7 CPU...any core i3 or FX CPU would be a downgrade from what you have right now.

To be worth it you'd have to look at least an unlocked i5-4690K or better.

If you are trying to upgrade from an i5 my honest advice is just wait a while, you have a pretty good performer atm and intel is constantly building bigger and better CPUs, even if you got the best one, very soon it would no longer be the best, not to say that upgrading is a bad idea, but the longer you wait the cheaper it is, last year, the CPU is just got was $500, and i just paid $235 for it by just waiting and pushing an old AMD Phenom II x4 920 that had a literal fire on top of it (the dust that collected on the heatsink literally burst into flames, as it had basically never been cleaned and was incredibly overclocked with an air cooler [crazy that it even still works lol] and no i didn't do that its owner had someone else build and overclock their machine, but those people never taught her anything about PC maintenance)

::EDIT::

lol i just looked up your CPU its the same socket as the i7 i just got for $235 I got the i7 3770k while not the best CPU ever it is the best one on that particular socket, but if you want a large increase in performance, you'd want to go with a newer socket and skip trying to upgrade within your socket limitation.

Troubleshooting a pc will make you believe in gremlins.

I'd bet money that the FX-9590 would out perform the i5-2400 any day, and its about $220 US

not in games, and you need a very high end 990FX motherboard with good power delivery for the FX-9590 and those cost a lot of money...

well that would still REALLY depend on a lot of factors, and yeah, you can get a bad-ass board for it for like $200 so at about $420 you are still under what it costs for the highest end i5 or i7 although obviously THOSE would easily out perform it if you get the correct versions of course. But this is far off topic lol either way if you want the best of the best you need an intel
