You couldn`t use only one stick, but you could use 2 or 4 sticks.

Well, two sticks in the correct DIMM slots. If they're in the wrong slots, it can still run in single channel. Normally, they need to be in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 to run in dual channel I believe.

Yes, but I was saying what would be the case if the CPU didnt support single channel.

Basically, if the CPU didn't support single channel, you could not use a single stick, as it would have to run in single channel. 

 

You would need two or more sticks to populate both channels in order to run dual (or 4+ sticks for quad channel, if supported) channel. 

 

However, pretty much no CPU (that I know of) doesn't support single channel. So you don't need to worry about it and you can run single sticks all you want.
