Hi. I'm from Spain so sorry if I use weird expressions, English is not my first language.

My current computer needs an update so I read a lot of pages and I ended having more doubts.

Components to mantain:

Graphic Card GTX 770 2GB

PSU Corsair TX650

SSD Crucial M4 128GB

Some HDD

I plan to buy this:

CPU i5 6600k

Cooler (AIR) Noctua NH-U14s

Motherboard: Asus ROG VIII Ranger or Asus ROG VIII Hero

RAM GSkill 2x8GB speeds 2666-2800-3000

Now the doubts

CPU

This machine is mainly for gaming, said that, I don't think an i7 makes sense. 100€ extra just for 1 or 2 extra fps?

Motherboard:

I plan to OC, as much as the air cooler can support.

Can't find reviews of the Ranger. How does it compare to the Hero?

I can see in the pics that the Hero has a lot more "stuff" around the cpu area. Can that "stuff" affect the overclocking potential?

Do you think the extra 30-40€ make sense

RAM
What speed do you think is the best bang for the buck?

Well,that's all.

I hope you can help me to clarify my ideas.

Thanks.

Get a 4690K and Z97 board or a Xeon E3-1231v3 and an H81 board.

I know in games this makes no difference, but I want newer platform.

I don't change my components too often, so when I do, I use to buy the newest.

This time is mainly for the ddr4 support, not for the cpu itself

why get a overkill mobo you can get a 100$ one and get another SSD or more RAM also ^ is a good option

The SSD is a good option, but I plan to buy a M.2 pcix when they reach a reasonable price.

More ram, also when needed and price get a little lower. 16GB now is enough for games, don't you think so?

About the motherboard, I also like the Asus z170-A.

It's 160€ instead of the 195€ of the Ranger (VAT included).

meh

by the time you'd upgrade to a ddr4 platform it'd be around as cheap as ddr3 is right now

mobo's don't effect performance. so if you want the most bang for your buck I'd advise going for whatever is cheapest and most reliable. if your just a asthetics guy and don't care about performance and just want to have prettiness. then you might as well go for the expeisnve ones

Why go for DDR4 right now? it does not impact game performance ;)

CPU: i7 3770k @4.0 GHz - Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V - Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 680 4GB - RAM: 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX Low Profil RAM (DDR3) - PSU: XFX Pro 850W -Storage: 850Pro + some old HDDs - Case: Sharkoon T28

Colour scheme doesn't matter.

All I wan't in the board is 4 internal usb3.0, decent onboard audio, at least 1 m.2 slot, many pwm fan headers.
And don't want/need any PCI legacy slot, or VGA.

I did almost the same when DDR3 comes out.

Back then I bought a phenom II 720be and 2x2gb ddr3 1333

And a year or 2years  later upgraded cpu to 965be and 4x2gb 1600.

Now I want to do something similar, so I want ddr4 even knowing the price is higer and the performance is similar.

Everybody know that when ddr3 begin to be discontinued, prices will sky rocket and could be a problem find compatible sticks. (it happened to friends with ddr, and ddr2 in the past)

Thanks.

  1. the u12s from noctua will perform well enough if you want to save some space
  2. your motherboard is very expensive. you can get away with a z170-p or z170 pro gaming from asus instead
  3. i would buy the 6600k if you want to save some money. the 6700k is not necessary, but it will perform better
  4. i think you can overclock your cpu just fine with the motherboards that i suggested above
  5. don't worry too much about ram frequency. just get what's affordable and within your budget
