Hey guys,

since the semester will start really soon (here in Germany) I've been thinking about getting a tablet that I'd use pretty much only for taking notes during lectures.

Requirements are pretty low: I'd like it to be Full HD, and 8 inch (though ten would be alright).

Kitkat is fine, though Lollipop would be a massive plus.

It should either have a good protective thing to have it upright or have a mechanism integrated.

A good integrated or compatible keyboard would be great

Budget would be around 200, lower would be better.

Basically, I want the Yoga 2 8", but I want the Windows version's keyboard, or a possibility to integrate it well.

Windows basically need not apply because at that price range, Android handles the low resources so much better (in my experience) that Windows loses. A Windows machine that could be changed to any Linux distro might actually be even better, would be kind of a dream come true for tinkering.

Cheers!

I'd like it to be Full HD

Um... Full HD is 1080p, which is windows's sort of thing, android is generally up to 1080p but doesnt really work well in tablet form.

If you're using it for note taking I would suggest a 10", 7 is too small and you'll find yourself struggling with taking notes.

I've used a yoga 2 10" and they're a very nice tablet, they're about 250 Euro from what I can see.

Gaming PC: CPU: i7 4770k@4.2GHz w/ CM Nepton 140xl, GPU: Gigabyte 1070 @2050, RAM: ADATA XPG V1 16GB@2133MHz, Mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 7, Case: Corsair NZXT S340.

Take my advice - get a laptop. Or at the very least a convertible with an x86 cpu and windows (for example the asus t100ta). It is a bit above your budget, but trust me when I say you'll regret your purchase very soon if you get something with android. You'll miss good mouse support, multi-window multitasking (even just having wikipedia open beside your document) and the freedom to install any operating system you like (a huge point in favour in my opinion). I tried using my 2012 nexus 7 for university, after a couple of weeks I was so exasperated that I dual booted android with ubuntu and I was still left a bit longing because the arm repositories aren't as rich as I'd like.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Don't get an android tablet for uni.

Get an Asus T100.

It's $185.

You can run Linux if you prefer it.

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.

Yeah, but that's a whooping €70 more than the 8", a bit much for the limited purpose. I already have a high(ish)-end laptop, but I don't want to carry a 5 pound 15.6" monster with me all day every day. Up to now I've mostly handwritten my notes, but I know my real-life archiving management.

You just installed Ubuntu on a nexus? I thought most Android devices are extremely locked down. Gives me hope that my zenfone can double as a linux machine in a few years.

That's quite a compelling deal! Does anyone have any experience how Windows handles these specs now? I remember using some HP thing with and AMD E2 and 2GB RAM with Win7 and it was a total stuttery mess. If I can just run any distro on it, that wouldn't be as much of an issue, though.

You're confusing yourself with ios ;) and people got windows 7 running on the zenfone 2 just a month after its release. No need to even reboot as I would on my n7. Getting linux running is even easier. However it's not that practical for uni use.

Not really, but I haven't really gotten into switching OSs on Android yet. I figured that on x86 it should be fine, but I super didn't know that Ubuntu had an ARM version.

And no, I won't be using my phone for Uni. Also, I need it as a phone right now. But in two years or so I can see using it as a light media pc thing hooked up to a TV via an otg adapter... ;) makes any TV smart.

And here I am with a $1300 AUD laptop that I use to take notes at uni... let alone a $400 tablet. I have got used to the weight however... And its easier to just use the laptop to do coding that do it at uni and copy the project to a usb to take home. (could still do that with a tablet mind you)
