What does it do?

And what is the point?

I assume special speakers are needed?

Just wondering as my new receiver has this feture

It achieves an active crossover for two-way passive speakers. Normally, passive speakers have a passive crossover.

 

What this means is that the crossover is done digitally, before amplification, as opposed to after amplification in the speaker itself.

 

A speaker with dedicated treble, midrange, and bass drivers could be tri-amped.

Cleaner, less strain on the amp. Audibly, probably not huge.

Well either way I'm liking my new receiver as it actually works...

And it was 15$ for an onkyo receiver so...

OK.

AV Receivers don't do active biamping generally (at least not on the mainstream level). They just passive biamp, thus not giving them any additional headroom. The only advantage of AVR biamping in this case is output circuit separation between the highs and the lows.
