What Video Card should I buy? (New Build)

gary.hall82

when 16gb and 32gb are the standard, the 8gb on the 390 will be no use either? your statement ;)

Well next year you will see a GTX 1060 (one version with 4GB one with 8GB), 1070 and 1080 with 8GB of HBM V2 and a 1080TI or Titan "XX" with 16GB of HBM V2 so yeah.

Also the 390 has way more bandwith and a 512 bit bus compared to the 256 bus of the 970. You can see there is a huge difference in Shadow of Mordor which is a vram eater.

Open your eyes and break your chains. Console peasantry is just a state of mind.

I recommended the 390, its a good piece of business by AMD, if I didn't have mine on water I would sell the 970 and grab a 390, they're also looking good for DX12 if the early info is anything to go by

Lol, why would you sell your 970 to grab a 390. If you would do that just go full nuts with the 980Ti.

Even on my 980Ti there is a huge difference when going from 4K to 5K that's all thanks to the crappy 384bit bus. So yes, HBM V2 is being released precisely at the right moment, because I'm pretty sure they will implent Displayport 1.3 with all 2016 cards, which can push the first 8K displays we might see at CES 2016.

Think I may hold out for a bit and save for a graphics card in the £250 to £300 price range. I'd much rather have a card that's gonna last than cheap out now and have to upgrade later.

I like the look of this one

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-evga-gtx-970-superclocked-acx-20-pcie-30-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1165mhz-boost-1317mhz-cores-1664-dp-h?utm_source=google+shopping&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=COv-35_21scCFQgUGwodgNUPmg

And it'd only be another £70 ish to spend ?

In that price range I really like the MSI Gaming R9 390 unless you're really desperate to save power.

The 980ti is $350 more...

It's not worth selling it if you already have it. But if someone is going to buy one or the other, 390 hands down.

Cause in the UK 970 used are like £200 -  £230. So I could get a brand new card a little faster and 8gb vram for like £20, keeping in mind ive had my 970 since release

Well in that case atleast get the 390X

What I don't understand how you can't afford a 980Ti yet you have a 4790K which is overkill in a setup less then two 980Ti's and a custom loop which probably was atleast 500£

@MDPS I bought the 1 x 8 GB stick as I plan to upgrade to another 8 GB stick giving me 16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz in Dual Channel. Thanks for all the recommendations so far, I was looking at the 960 2 GB SSC and 4GB versions tonight, but wanted a more experienced opinion

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-evga-gtx-960-ssc-acx-20plus-pcie-30-(x16)-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1279mhz-boost-1342mhz-cores-1024-3x-?utm_source=google+shopping&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CNKGwLzz1scCFUOZGwodATIOwQ

I can totally recommend the 4GB version, and try for a Superclocked if they have one (not entirely sure) and if you can afford it. It'll last a lot longer with new titles.

Cause I only played at 1080p 10 months ago. I tend to get the more powerful CPUs as they last longer then GPUs (in terms of scaling rather than actual life)

And the loops are as much about quiet running as they are about performance, not to mention the fact I can keep the same loop going from rig to rig, especially as the block fits 2011, 1150 and 1151

We wont see another -Ti Variant for around 18 months. We will See 1080/1070 At launch (I reckon march time), then 1 year and a bit later we will see the 1080Ti. I am currently waiting around for the 1080 (or whatever its called) to be released.

I would ditch the tiny SSD so you could up your GPU budget 60 pounds to get an R9 290 instead of an R9 380. Here is a very good 290.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00I0K670E/?tag=pcp0f-21

Going so small on SSD doesn't make sense in the days of 60 GB game installs, and the R9 290 will actually get you 60 fps at ultra in most games. Instead of buying a crappy SSD and a midrange GPU, buy the good GPU now and then later on add a 500 GB 850 EVO so that you can actually have some games on it.

I plan to install games on the WD 1TB drive, leaving the SSD as my OS drive and for work.

A 250$ Card will not deliver 60fps the next two Years. Games like Witcher 3 or GTA5 will make it struggle now in Ultra settings and Games will get more demanding.

The Graphicscard should be the most expensive piece of Hardware in your Gaming Rig.

I am getting the 4690K because I plan to overclock and upgrade over time. I figured if I have a decent enough spec at the start then I can add a high end video card later.

YOYOYO!!! Great news! I just got an email from Newegg! Found an R9 280X for only $185 (with MIR. Without it its still only $215)! It also comes with a dual fan heatsink, and has 3GB of VRAM. Oh yeah, and it comes with a free copy of DiRT Rally. Like. Yes (but the choice is up to you :P).

EDIT: May help if I attach the link x_x: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-150-678&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=GD090215&nm_mc=EMC-GD090215&cm_mmc=EMC-GD090215-_-index-_-Item-_-14-150-678

Yes it only boosts up to 100MHz but hey, thats fairly good for the price.

Oh yeah and it can probably handle 2K no problem. Just lower your gaming specs a little. It may even be able to run 4K on a day-to-day basis as you said it's [your computer] not comepletely for gaming.
