Will work, but you will have less memory bandwidth.

Just splurge and get two 4Gb sticks. You'll thank yourself later.

"splurge" "2x4gb" rather than "1x8gb".

That is the weirdest usage of Splurge I have ever seen.

I would buy the 1 stick of 8GB RAM and just save up for another one later. You will thank yourself later. 16GB of RAM is fun. RAMDisks and Fancy Cache are useful programs. Among other things.

Yes, it would work. But have only one RAM slot occupied would not take advantage of dual channel memory. So it would be better to get 2X4GB memory. Unless you are going to add another 8GB a little while later it would not be optimal.

1x8gb cant be much cheaper than 2x4gb and if you are eventually going to want 16gb for some reason you should have 2 more slots to do that with.

Well there should be 4 sticks of ram in the motherboard right? And windows 7 home premium does not even support more then 16 gigs, assuming thats what he uses.

To make use of DDR (Double Data Rate) You need at least 2 sticks. However, I have never seen RAM speeds affect a system unless it is an APU based system, or a worstation/editing system.

So to me, it likely does not matter. At all.

There is no point in going with 1x8  if you are running windows 7 home premium at least.

The point of going 1x8GB is so later you can upgrade to 2x8GB and eventually (2-3 years from now) 4x8GB.

In which case, I hope you will have upgrade to a better version of Windows in that time. Windows 9 will probably be here then, and I hope it is a lot more successful than Win8 is.

If you want performance, go for 2x4GB sticks or 2x8 sticks for more bandwidth and performance. For upgradability, go with 1x8 or 1x16, if it exists

Yes it will work. The ram will just run in single channel. If you want to get better performance you should get a 2x4gb kit in order to run them in dual channel.

Can I only use one 8gb stick? On the ud3h z87, and the 4670k? Will it work?

The performance loss will be minimal (less than 1%) for gaming, get a second slot later.

There will be a loss and I can almost guarentee itll be more than your 1%, now by how much idk. youd have to find a bench but that migh be hard to come by as mose people building their own PC would use Dual/Tripple/Quad by default. Prices of 1x8gb and 2x4gb arnt all that different and never have in the past with other sizes as well.

actually buying 2x 8 gb you save the price of one 4 GB chip compared to if you were to have gotten 4x 4gb chips so it does make a difference. as for the performance loss, I can guarantee you he'll be fine starting off with a single 8 gig.

2x8gb http://goo.gl/X3ixyE

also I kinda need to ask what yo need 16gb for  and when youll need more and how long youll gimp your performance for $8

it's $20 in south africa, I pull 6 gig usage on "idle" since I run a crapload of programs.

by the way those 2x 8 gb chips cost the price of one 8 gb chip here.

2x 4 gb chips will cost you $80 here (1333)
