I started discrete math and I have a question on a problem. As a logical thinker, I don't get question A.

After doing other questions in this book, I'd really like to know what the guy was smoking when he made this book.

Note: You have to know what approval voting is. This section is on approval voting. As for the graphs, the number under the line represent # of people who voted their choices in that order ex: 22 people had "A" as their first choice, "B" as their second, and so on.

My questions.

Question 1 (regarding Q.11 paragraph): They flip a coin for the 2nd and 3rd choice to decide whether to give approval votes for those choices. First of all, why only the 2nd and 3rd? Does that mean their other three choices used a different voting method? How is that possible. You can't just decide to do a specific voting for certain choices only.

Question 2: It came up heads half the time. The book doesn't say what heads mean. Does that mean yay or nay? What does heads mean???

Question 3: "How many approval votes would you expect each of the five choices to get?" Then what was the point of flipping a coin for approval votes for the 2nd and 3rd choice?
