F@H build

Are there min specs for what a dedicated F@H rig should be.?

I was thinking about building one since I have a spare 120 GB SSD and a gtx 750Ti gpu sitting around. All I need is a case, cpu, psu, ram and mobo.

Intel i7-4790K Processor, 32 GB Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3-1600 RAM, ASUS Z-87 Pro Motherboard, Corsair RM 750 PSU, 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, 2 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs, ASUS GeForce GTX 970 STRIX GPU, Corsair Carbide 500R Case, AFT Pro-77U Card Reader, Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor – U2415, Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, Windows 9 (Windows 10 with StartIsBack++)

I was going to build this on the cheap side (i.e. Amd build?) using an am1 socket. No good?

What do you people recommend?

It was my old rig. I didn't choose the parts, either. It was a pre-built work PC hand-me-down. I was 11 when my mother gave it to me.

A 750 Ti should be fine, you could easily go and buy a C2D or a i3 to save some power.

Just get a Haswell i3, lga 1150 h81m board, 4gb ddr3 ram, seasonic 520w mii12 PSU/or any power efficient and reliable PSU, and a fractal design core 1000 3.0.

I was going to do a mITX for it.

I was thinking 4 GB or ram too.

To cheap even further, a Celeron + 300 Seasonic PSU would be even better.

And soon you find out the power consumption and the PPD you get isn't worth the money......If you just use something like a 750 TI(easily 150K PPD) and a standard CPU should be fine.

That's what I was gonna do, just slap it in the basement and check up on it every now and then.

If the board even has a PCIE slot in the first place. xD

But 750 Ti's don't consume a lot of power and great for folding because of their points(150K) and they barely use any power.

Consumption of power is pretty low... Roughly 850-900 watts on most days for the entire "folding lab."

The Athlon 5350 uses about 25W alone and has more than enough power for you build.

Make sure that you get a motherboard with a phyical PCIe x16 slot.

You can get a nice combo (CPU, MoBo, 2GB RAM) for under 100$.

you need go single thread performance for f@h as each gpu requires 1 thread.

Rig Specs:

AMD Threadripper 5990WX@4.8Ghz

Asus Zenith III Extreme

Asrock OC Formula 7970XTX Quadfire

G.Skill Ripheartout X OC 7000Mhz C28 DDR5 4X16GB

On the Intel side, get something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G3450 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($60.99 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($42.89 @ OutletPC)

Memory: Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($28.24 @ Amazon)

Total: $132.12

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-08-26 13:33 EDT-0400

And on the AMD side something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD 5350 2.05Ghz Quad-Core Processor ($45.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: Asus AM1M-A Micro ATX AM1 Motherboard ($37.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Memory: Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($28.24 @ Amazon)

Total: $112.22

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

For folding on the 750ti alone I would definitely recommend the intel system, since the power consumption factor isn't worth considering at this pricepoint.

EDIT:

I chose the fastest Intel processor (0,1 GHz faster would have cost 20$ more, so yeah) to fit in your range, you could even go with a cheaper model without a noticeable loss in performance.

EDIT2:

Corrected spelling mistakes...

You can do an AM1 socket build and get the best AMD GPU you can afford?

#1.  Why would I buy another GPU when I already have a 750Ti?

#2.  I don't do AMD video cards, nvidia only.
