Problem right clicking on desktop

I have a problem with right clicking on the desktop and it saying "this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way"

 

I don't know what is wrong

You could try disabling everything in your context menu, and see if that helps. I'd recommend using Ccleaner to do it, it makes it pretty easy. I think the context menu list is under tools>startup>context in Ccleaner.

It's probably malware.

 

I would do a system restore to before the problem, then run a scan of: malwarebytes.

The context menu on the desktop shouldn't use any runtime library unless a program has added to it (as said above, in CCleaner disable everything on the Tools\startup\context menu page and try again) or you have some form of malware/virus, so use malwarebytes to check for a virus. If nothing else can solve it, a clean install will fix all your problems.

A clean would "work", kinda.

 

I believe the change is originating from a modified registry key, that is the reason I suggested to to a system restore first ( its basically a time capsule for the registry)

in order to undo any damage already made to it.

Then after it's restored clean / check for "future" virus and/or malware outbreak.

It's strange though because if you just create a registry value, that should still not require the C++ runtime library because it, like the rest of the OS, should have been coded in C, and doesn't require a runtime library. It's worth a try though, and certainly do a malware scan. The CCleaner thing actually affects dynamically generated content though, which could cause an issue like this. Out of interest, is it only on the desktop or anywhere in windows explorer?
