Hi guys first time poster here but been following linus for some time now. I have a few questions about overclocking the 4770k since I have now delidded mine and will be watercooling it without the IHS within the next few weeks. So far I have it sat at 4.2GHz at about 1.13v with an NH-D14 cooling it and the fans at 7v. I haven't done a proper stability test yet since I've been a bit lazy with it and since I'm a gamer I typically just turn my comp on and go. I'll do a full stress test today to make sure it's 100% stable at that but I have a few concerns.

 

First question is while stressing with aida64 I notice the voltage gets higher than I set it to while stress testing with aida64 and I just want to confirm is that normal? It's sitting at 1.185v while stressing right now despite me setting it at 1.13v.

 

Second question is I've noticed my computer randomly stutters while watching video. Both audio and the video stutter for 3-5 seconds then back to normal and I was wondering if that could be due to instability? I know it most likely is but I've been overclocking for a long time now and never experienced this before and it just seems a bit odd from the usual error while stress testing or a blue screen. I can game for hours at a time with 0 issues so this is a bit confusing to me.

 

My last question is about messing with other settings other than just the voltage and the multiplier. I know with Sandy and Ivy it was as simple as that and my last cpu was an I7 920 which I had at  4.2GHz for years before upgrading to this and that was quite a bit more complicated than the simple Ivy and Sandy overlocking. From what I've been reading there are other settings such as the ring voltage etc and I was wondering do I need to touch those or can I just stick with the Sandy and Ivy method of just raising the voltage and multiplier?

That second paragraph seems to be worded wrong, no big deal.

 

I haven't had a chance to play with a Haswell. But I'll give you a word of advice that applies to all overclocking anyway. Ramp your fans up while doing any kind of stress testing. Then put them back to 7v for your daily activities. Absolutely no point in having your fans undervolted while stability testing. ;)

 

 

 

Oh and fyi... theres a lot more to overclocking SB & IB than just playing with the multi and Vcore! Haswell might be a dream (for me) ...options, oh I love the options. Wish ya luck

He stated his voltage is being overcompensated. It said the voltage was set at 1.13, but goes up to 1.185 when stress testing using AIDA64.

 

To the OP, yes that is normal. Though some people can undercompensation.

Oh wait.. I thought he meant to say Prime95 in place of that first Aida64. That would make sense....I guess both ways it makes sense..  Not sure what board OP is using, could be a really easy fix.

Yes I'm stress testing with Aida64 as it seems to be the most recommended for haswell from what I've read.

 

I'm not sure it's my motherboard as I think I have seen it somewhere that it's normal for haswell to bump up the voltage while being stressed really hard like with Aida64 but I just want to confirm it anyway. Sorry I didn't mention what motherboard I'm using, it is a MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming if that helps at all.

 

I have also bumped the voltage of my fans up to 12v for the time being but since I have delidded it wasn't getting very hot at all anyway with the hottest I've seen it be about 65C. I could probably get that temp lower with a better seating of my heatsink but since I'm moving to water cooling soon anyway I won't bother for now.

Many members on this forum have your cpu+mobo. I'm sure they'll have the experience and know what to tell you about the voltage.

 

65c at 4.2 with an NH D14? Wow, people aren't kidding. Haswell is really a suicidal, axe murderer.. I would of guessed much lower temps at that clock speed.
