ring nebula m57

These pictures were captured by the naperville astronomical associations at the Dupage Valley Observatory with a telescope with astrophotography (basically a telescope with a camera looking at the mirror instead of an eye piece) The pictures on the screen looked much better than in the pictures I taken with a note 4 in extremely low light and I can't use the flash for obvious reasons as I was right next to the telescope. We also saw with the astrograph some of what I initially thought were shooting stars but turned out to be iridium flares. We also saw what we assumed to be two spy satellites you can tell because one is trailing the other.

I wish I had a larger lens, mine is only 300mm and with my D3200 I can get pretty good pictures but I wish I could zoom further. I was able to get this from my backyard though! http://imgur.com/8KNVuuN

Who knew you could take a picture with a toaster.

Not many people know this, but cameras are not that good in extremely low-light situations. They are not as good as human eyes in the dark. (even though humans have poor night vision naturally). Even with a 30 second exposure, a full-frame sensor, and with the lens' aperture wide open, you might not get enough light on the sensor to produce an usable image.

i tried with my dad's iphone 6+ and the pictures were even worse

Smaller sensor = much less light can be gathered = worse low-light performance.

Of course there are other variables too, but sensor size does matter quite a bit.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

oh i thought the other person was asking about the exposure time of the astrograph. i didnt set an exposure time for my note 4 camera and im not sure if you can

Thats why most cameras have flash

Yeah... You can't really change the exposure manually (well... not much anyway) on phone cameras. The aperture is usually fixed (can't be changed), but I can't see why shutter speed couldn't be changed.

Some phone/camera hybrids exist that do have manual settings, but those are a bit odd.

yes and i cant use the flash because i was right next to the telescope

attachicon.gifgdro35sm.jpg

there is the screen and there is the telescope

Yeah... That would screw up people's natural night vision. That's why red light was used for lighting instead of anything else.

Awesome pics

I have an Meade ETX 125 and my first telescope, an orion 90 mak.

With the 125 I can just make out the ring nebula with averted vision but when I look right at it it disappears....kinda cool

Celestron makes great scopes too. Don't want to start a Blue vs Orange flame war:)
