Dear Linustechtips Community.
Some time ago, I decided to build myself a pc for extreme gaming, rendering and hashing.
So that means for me that I need some powerful stuff, and therefor, also a powerful power supply.
My PC should feature the following parts:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k

GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 980 TI

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600

HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB (+1x 3TB USB3.0 external HDD)

Now, I am going to choose the right PSU for my system.
For that reason, I went to outervision.com/power-supply-calculator and entered the specs of my future pc.
this was 533W.
The website recommended the EVGA Supernova 650 G2, which is, as the name says, 650W.
Now, I have got some questions.
1) Have you got some good/bad experience with that PSU?

2) I want to go even further and push my hardware the hardest by overclocking it.
Is this power supply enough for overclocking or will I have to buy one with some higher wattage for that purpose?
3) I am very confused about the whole 12V-rail-thing that I hear always off youtube and other forums, but I do not understand what that means for me.
Will this PSU put out the 24V which I will need to power my system (esp. my GPU)?

I hope somebody will answer my silly question.
Thank you:)

Its pretty good. If you dont really care about efficentcy and can find the XFX TS 650W 80+ Bronze for a lower price, get that.

Or the TS 650W 80+ Gold

Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Turbo 3.5GHz | 8GB Kingston DDR3-1333 | MSI Radeon R7 370 OC to 1020mhz | EVGA Supernova NEX B1 750W | GIGABYTE GA-B85-D3H | Inwin Velocity OEM Case | 120mm broken fan

Thank you very much Sir:)

It was especially curious for me, if the 12V rails are good enough for that.
I heared for a normal graphics card, 18Amps are needed at least.
For Enthusiast-grade ones, 24V should be fine.
And for dual-GPU cards of AMD Crossfire/Nvidia SLI, 32Amps will be needed.
So I searched for the website.
There is something that said 20Amps, and something that said 53Amps, so I was pretty confused which number of that to look for.
But now, I think the answer is pretty clear for me.
Thank you:)

It's a good PSU, I'd go for it.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

As mentioned above the EVGA Supernova G2 line are some excellent PSUs. The whole 12V rail thing is as far as i can recall just an ancient myth. It doesn't really matter nowadays but don't quote me on that. All i know is that your system won't need that much power. probably ~350 max with all overclocks applied under synthetic load. You could probably also get away with a decent ~500W PSU.

who cares...
