so, i have this *horrible* klipad D791 which i can barely find any information on, and the stuff i find is in french, which isnt one of my best languages.

is there a "semi-safe" way i can root this device, without feeling like there's a pretty big chance of me bricking it?

--

i'm kind of new to the world of rooting, because i've not really had the need to before. (my first android phone was a second hand, which came rooted, and got replaced by a moto G that does all it needs to without rooting)

i'd be amazed if someone could give tips, direct me to a guide, or even guide me trough the process of doing it.

its not that it'd be a big loss if it gets bricked (free device, i aint complaining) but it'd be nice if i could do the stuff and the thing, so i can use the SDcard slot for storage. (1GB internal, by default it cant use the sdcard, but i got that bit figured out, just need a root to get it going)

if i try and its not "working", will it say its not compatible, will it brick my tablet, or will it just do nothing?

I think it says it's not supported.

Hold Power and Volume down on the device and see what kind of bootloader screen you get. They might use something similar to a better known brand. And you can use a similar method for unlocking.

However I presume you're gonna have trouble finding a way to unlock the bootloader because it's such an uncommon device.

I've seen some discussions on the tablet being pre-rooted.

With USB debugging enabled and using ADB try to see if the device shows up :

adb devices

Then :

adb shell id

If it is pre-rooted, then it should give you

uid=0 gid=0

well... it doesnt have volume buttons.

it does say "klipad" on bootup tho. (followed by "powered by android" like any chinese ipad ripoff tablet would)

Haha. Oh man. Well you can get to the bootloader screen with adb reload bootloader.

But follow what nineshadow said first, seems there's a chance the bootloader ain't even locked.

-snip-

the device properly connects to my pc (connected klipad blabla) i enable usb debugging on my device (causing it to reconnect to my pc as klipad blabla) but it doesnt show up under list of deviced attached (empty list)

tried to do the driver thing (where you force the device drivers to the ones that come with the sdk) and it seems to give the exact same result.

I had this cheep rca tablet, and like you, I wanted it rooted. I never found any info about the device. Nothing, Nada. Tried kingo root, and that worked.

Now, I don't remember if kingo root was actually deemed safe by xda, but I do remember there being caution towards it.

decide to risk it for the biscuit, and the rooting app said "root failed"

trying the desktop version now.

EDIT: desktop version doesnt connect, as expected, since adb didnt connect either.

EDIT EDIT: for future reference, the desktop version of kingo comes with some adware junk. mehh, malwarebytes took care of it.
