i3 4170 idles in BIOS at 45C

Lampy
Go to solution Solved by Aytex,

guess what!

ITS NORMAL!

I just put together my first computer, and I booted into the BIOS since I don't have my hard drive yet. After letting my i3 4170 rest in the BIOS for a bit, I noticed that the temps would sit around 45C. I highly doubt that this is normal, even with the stock cooler that I'm using. I double-checked all the pins, and they're all fully seated. The fan can spin freely (for better or for worse; I can see why people opt for aftermarket coolers for their silence). Should I try to replace the thermal paste, or is there another issue I've been overlooking? Or am I just overreacting?

Any insight is helpful. Thanks in advance. :)

Sounds right for stock cooling.

Seems fine to me... It's haswell on stock cooling. My Xeon isn't a refresh and when it was on stock cooling it would idle at 50-55C.

Glad to know I'm just overreacting.

I can't help but feel there's a tiny implementation of passive aggression in your reply. In any case, thanks. :)

So pretty much invest in aftermarket cooling for the future? I mean, I heard the stock coolers were bad, but even my roommate's i5 4690k was running about 5C cooler on the stock cooler, so I was just wondering.

That core i3 is basically a 3.7 ghz dual core with 4 threads which = 4 virtual cores. When I used to have a stock cooler on my i7 4790k it was idling around 30-40c but thermal paste on the stock cooler was Diamond Thermal paste. So I think it could be normal so yeah. I also notice when I boot into the OS and use a program like Speecy or Intel Power Gadget the temperature it seems different than the bios.

not worth it on a locked cpu unless you live in a very very hot climate or don't like how loud it is.. Just stick with it. Idle temps don't matter that much. Load should be in the 70s and might hit the 80s. You're fine.

Never thought of that. I'll look into it when I get the hard drive.
