BT pros- can use any router you want without an issue

This is the reason i just shut sky out my potions because their router is absolute S*** and unless you get the right router and customize the firmware for it to work, plus I went with BT because my friend who lives basically next to me has BT and has never had a dropout or any problems.

First of all, my Internet speeds are around 40mb/s download and 32mb/s upload using TP-Links they provided when they installed my fibre optic. My experience with the company though is quite negative, I was on a data usage limit of 20GB and I thought I was being fairly sensible with my usage and as it turned out I used 40GB over my usage and they charge £5 per 5GB you go over. So I was faced with a very large bill at the end of the month. To make things worst, they defended themselves by saying that they had sent me emails letting me know that I had gone over my allowance of the month WHICH THEY DID NOT. Now I am on the unlimited plan so now I won't have that problem anymore.

By any chance do you have multiple lines to your house and are banding them to together to get that upload?

my mum has sky fibre and the sky sr101 and its fine, i know its nothing fancy and isnt dual band but i still got  constant 38 down on wireless, also the guy above clearly doesn't have 32Mbps upload as no company does that unless its business.

However I still wonder why they haven't stepped up their game yet in the router department.

I would avoid Sky at all costs, they have stupid lockdowns on the equipment you use.

TalkTalk on the other hand are completely open and you don't even need to have PPPoE, it just works by DHCP, and the service has been great. Been with them, from ADSL to VDSL.

Comb it with a brick

sky use MER not PPPoe, the routers not the greatest but atleast theyre more reliable then talk talk and bt, have you seen how many have complained about talk talk and bt over the years? they have the worst customer service out of all isps and are the two worst for giving speeds far less than advertised.

Even if BT and TalkTalk are similar, I will get a better upload anyway, and a router that doesn't shut off every 2 hours. :3

this is wireless (wired isnt much better) 5ghz. and this is why my own router, the homehub 5 is shit, the speed is never reliable, one test could be 70 the next 45.

Well to me those speeds seem about right for your avg customer so unless you live next to your exchange you will never get the full 80/20 anyway.

and people have said the Home Hub 5 is a lot better when not using the in-built modem and using and openreach one instead.

EDIT: also talktalk only gives about 1.8 Mbps upload and I get around 37-38 down so with BT I get 9.5 up :3

i have the hg612 modem and had the hh5 plugged in and it was no better, i am connected at 80/20 but you will never get 80 on a speedtest, the max is 76-78 and thats if youre wired and lucky.

also it has nothing to do with the exchange mate its to do with how close to the cabinet you are.

That max sounds normal anyway I've never seen someone get 80 Mbps on any Normal FTTC broadband and I'm wired anyway :3

EDIT: sorry I got confused about the cabinet.. Also have you split the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands because that should improve wifi speeds, also turn off smart setup if you haven't already.

Indeed I did mate, I've had 3 home hub 5s from bt and all were shite, never had consistent wifi with them, you have to have it paired with a modem or the drop outs are ridic.

Don't get me wrong the home hub 5 is better than all other ISPs routers but the wireless speeds aren't consistent

That is strange, I think it must be a batch or something because my friend has a HH5 and the wireless range is decent (although he has thick walls) but it never dropped out or was inconsistent.

But I will report back when i get mine in the post (3rd September)

Na mate, whats sickening is over the past year bt have increased line rental charges by £3... I looked at my previous bills and it was £15.99 and now it's £18.99

Was paying £166 every 3 months and now its £119.50 so saved around £45 a month.

80/20 £21.20

Rental £18.99

Anytime calls £5.50 (I think)

Just had my BT install today everything went smoothly and the new HH5 is an absolute tank, on 5GHz wireless i get 38Mbps down and 9Mbps up and the range is even better than my old router as well. Overall I am very pleased, plus I also didn't get any loss of internet for the day either :D

how much you paying :P,  the hh5 is shit for the 76Mbps package, never consistent, i just hope you havent got a bad hh5, theyre very well  known for disconnecting a lot, i had 3 with this issue and now use a modem too but without the hh5.

do me a favour bro? i wanna see whats the best your line can do, login to the router page 192.168.1.254, then go to troubleshooting, then helpdesk, put the admin password in which is on the back of the hh5 and send me a screenshot :P

ive got some tips that can make it even better. (you basically wanna seperate the 2.4ghz and the 5ghz)

wait, have you got a modem connected to the homehub? also disable smart wireless.

if the homehub 5 was connected by itself with no seperate modem it would show your line rate.

Yeah I use the ECI Openreach modem because It's more stable + i was with TalkTalk before so I had one :3

I check the BT website speedtest because it tells you your max line rate and mine is 39Mbps & 10Mbps (I Think)

gooood :P one thing you must know is that if you're connected to an huawei cabinet(the one with double doors) with that eci modem, one the modem doesnt support g.inp, only the huawei one does and two your ping will be higher.

what ping do you get to bbc.co.uk? from cmd.
