I'm looking to build a new system, for phot editing mostly. Going to run Lightroom and some other photo editing software. Any ideas on a good motherboard and CPU to use.

Motherboard it's self doesn't impact performance all that much, I would probably go with an i5 either gen, both good for photo editing.

i7 only if you plan on doing a lot of importing/exporting of several 1000 photos. Otherwise LR won't profit from Hyper Threading at all and all that matters is a maximum single core clock speed.

Thanks for the help, I was wondering if mobo's with more slots for ram would be a better choice?

A standard matx/atx mobo should support 32gigs of ram. Will you be needing more?
