Best AM2 processor?

Go to solution Solved by connorpiper,

Uhh, budget is really the the best prefomance per $.

Well that is the i5 4460 which is $180-$190

But in most cases the i3 4160 is great for budget.

I am looking for the best CPU that you can get on an AM2 motherboard.

You should be looking for a new motherboard. And a new CPU.

Yea, there is no point staying on AM2. You can't do much of anything with that.

The Phenom x3 8750 would be a great option if the board supports it (it is a + chip so I'm guessing no) so the best option in your case for AM2 is Athlon 64 x2.

Actually most AM2 boards will run an AM2+ chip, just at a reduced hypertransport frequency. The overall processing power is still there, just a few things will run much slower.

Still the best bet is to ditch AM2 and do a complete overhaul.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Awesome didn't know that! I also agree seeing now it seems he has a much bigger budget than thought :)
