Say an update to OS X 10.10.5.?

defiantly big updates like that can screw with the booting of the os

if you update the software on a hackintosh will it kill it? thanks!

i don't know yet it is for a friend. i am working on PPP right now.

Do a full time machine backup, then update, if all else fails, restore from the backup.

If you update the OS it will usually break drivers and cause a kernel panic. You can re-run some of the software he used to create it (if he did) to fix it. Can't recall the name of it, multi-beast I think. The best place to go would be TonyMac's forum (if I recall that's the correct site) and ask there too. They should be able to help you out.
