I think it goes somewhere along the lines of spend more on the GPU than the CPU to avoid bottlenecks.

Would you get a somewhat noticeable improvement from a modern I5 in some games? -yes

Will your performance get so reduced that you might as well get a lower end gpu -no

Will you be able to get nice framerates in 1080p? - yes

 

If you want to game at 144 hz your gonna have a problem with quite some games,

If you crank up the settings so that you stay around 40-45 fps you wont lose much performance compared to an i5.
