Hey guys,

I'm a 3D/VFX/Motion freelancer, and need a new workstation. This will be my first build.

Although I'll be relying mainly on the CPU for rendering initially, I may move into GPU rendering down the line a bit (Vray/Octane). Programs I use are (Cinema 4D, Maya, After Effects, Nuke, Photoshop, Premiere etc.)

I've done a bit of research, and this is what I've come up with so far.

CPU - i7-5820k 6 core 3.3

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117402

GPU - Nvidia GeForce 980 Ti

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/geforce-gtx-980-ti/buy-gpu

MOBO - ASUS X99-E USB 3.1

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G37P8164&cm_re=asus_x99-e_ws-_-13-182-968-_-Product

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws 32GB extreme DDR4 2800

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231824

CASE - Define R5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352048

SSD - SAMSUNG 850 PRO 512GB (I have additional external/internal non-SSD drives)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147361

Cooling - Noctua NH-D15 SS02 (Necessary for overclock?)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608045&cm_re=noctua-_-35-608-045-_-Product

POWER - Corsair HX1000i 1000W (meh?)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-139-082

OS - Windows 10 Pro?

What do you guys think? Price isn't set in stone, so if there is something you think needs to be changed or upgraded I'm all ears. I'm also open to the idea of 2 video cards, but was thinking about maybe waiting till the new M4000s come out. However I will need something now, and I wouldn't be able to use a 980 Ti AND a M4000 both right? Because one is 6GB and the other is 8GB?

I selected that MOBO because it is WS specific, and has USB 3.1 Good choice?

I'm certainly out of my area of expertise, so any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!!!

:D

I love that mobo. Love it love it love it. Sucks I didnt get the U3.1 version.. but you know....

Uhh on the 5820K, you'd probably get around 4-4.2GHZ on that air cooler. Anything higher, and you need to be under water.

$3,000 or so. I'd go a bit more if I needed to.

Yeah, I was unsure about that whole quadro business. As far as I know, for GPU rendering in the programs I'd be using, # of Cuda cores is the most important? I could be wrong, I just read that the 980 Ti gave comparable performance, at a low cost.

Just saw the pcpartpicker comment

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QcV8Bm

Looks like the case I had in mind might not work with the selected components. Any suggestions? Also, I'm just kind of guessing on the power supply, and I wasn't sure which GeForce 980 Ti I should be looking into (If I should be looking into one at all) :P

Thanks again for your time guys!

some of those programs are better for cuda and some are better for the quadro drivers...to bad you couldn't use both

id do a little research first to find out what programs use what card better first

Uhh for the build, Quadro's are quite expensive, and for GPU rendering, I honestly do fine on my 980. if you really need cuda performance, maybe get 2 980 Ti's. I don't really see a point in quadros, as price to perf wise they aren't that spectacular.

Here is an idea, get a quadro card when it comes out, and add it in with the 980 Ti if you end up needing it. Just added performance!

Edit: the M4000 looks really promising for GPU rendering... Maybe wait for that?

Edit again, looking back YES You can use a 980 Ti and a M4000 together. They will both work in the same system. the GB difference only affects SLI and Quadro's cant SLI anyways.

just did a bit of research

looks like the 980 ti coupled with a black magic 10 bit hdmi card with a 10 bit monitor is the best setup

Ok, so maybe I should get the 980, and then a M4000 when it comes out. I would totally wait till they come out, but have some work coming up.

You know, I remember hearing a lot about Black Magic several years back, but since it was out of my range financially, I deleted it from memory. I'll have to take another look!

this is if you want to do 10bit editing..since the 980 ti doesn't support 10 bit..y you need the hdmi card
