Hello!

I was building a new PC and it looked like the Xeon E5 [Intel Xeon E5-1620 V3] with 3.5 Ghz is 100$ cheaper (at 400$) then the I7 5820k with 3.3 Ghz (at 500$). Does that mean that the Xeon is better?

I'll be mostly playing Video games, doing univ work and from time to time edit some videos (every 5 months or so?)

Should I get the Xeon or stick with the 5820k?

Thanks

I love my 5820K. The only reason to go xeon's is if you need cores higher than what the i7's are at.

But that's what am confused about haha, the Xeon is cheaper and.... more powerful?

No, it's less powerful in every objective way. 2c/4t less than the 5820k and a much lower clock speed (assuming you OC the 5820k, which you should).

*edit* if you're even considering that Xeon you should be looking at Z97 and a 4790k, which has the same core count and a much higher clock speed, for a similar price (394 vs 415 CAD).

You are right! I was not aiming to OC it since I don't think I have a warranty over it... (I'll have to do more research on that), but let's say I OC it how much of a jump from 3.3 Ghz would it increase?

Most 5820k samples end up somewhere between 4.3-4.6GHz on average. There are no guarantees with overclocking past the manufacturers rated specs, but those speeds should be fairly easy to reach.
