This is the same socket that the X56xx Xeons use right?  If so you could grab a second hand X5650 for like 80 dollars and have 2 more cores.  There are others in that series that you could look at also (X5670, etc.)

not really, a i7 930 cost around 30$ and can clock to 4.0 easily ( mine can go up to 4.4, but my cooler cant handle that :/).

The i7 975 is just a slightly higher binned card.

 

The motherboard for 80$ is actually fine, x58 mobos still go for a pretty penny (is everybody trying to build gaming pcs with that or do they put in a 990x for editing? I dont know...)
