Is it worth it?

Go to solution Solved by Aytex,

go 4 xeon

Hey all, I am planning on throwing in a Xeon E3-1231v3 to replace my i3 4170, probably in a few months. Reasons are:

1. It's a hyperthreaded quad core like an i7 without the price tag of an i7.

2. Xeons are generally regarded as being high end so that's cool I guess.

3. I'm not overclocking, nor do I plan on overclocking as the my board is only a B85 chipset.

4. I also don't want to overclock due to the fact that it's a tiny ass case (SG05, heat and all) even if it's going to be liquid cooled by a Seidon 120V.

So my question is, is worth just buying an entirely new board (when mITX LGA1151 boards come out), a brand new kit of DDR4 to replace my DDR3 kit, and a not yet released locked Skylake processor? Or should I just stick with the Xeon? My rig is going to be upgraded from my GTX 760 as you can see in my signature to an R9 380 Nitro from Sapphire (as soon as my stupid laptop sells). I will be mostly gaming, however I do a lot of CAD work as well as Photoshop and Excel (Word and PowerPoint and stuff for school). Which should I go for?

-New Skylake CPU, new DDR4 kit, new (not yet released) mITX LGA1151 board and the stock cooler that will come with the locked Skylake ships.

or

-Keep all my current hardware and just swap out the CPU for the Xeon, and add a Seidon 120V (I've had this cooler before and I was very impressed by it) to keep things frosty.

Thanks!

Keep the current hardware. BUT, instead of the 1231, get the 1230. It's the same thing, but cheaper. Also, don't get a Seidon 120v. Use that money to buy a beter GPU instead.

I think that Xeon 1231v3 is more than capable. Also there is a small tiny amount of performance gain from skylake. I would say, stick to 1150 for now.

The GPU cost is a separate thing. The R9 380 is plenty for my needs, plus I love the Nitro card if you have seen another thread that I don't feel like digging up.

Right... then invest into an SSD instead, if you don't already have one.

R9 380, suits my needs for 1080p, and I don't plan on upgrading my monitor as it's still a lovely monitor (VG248QE). Plus the Sapphire R9 380 Nitro is the sexiest card I've ever laid eyes on.

I have a Samsung 840 PRO 512GB, I think I'm good. Like I said this entire cost is just for the CPU upgrade.

Then just go for the Xeon and increase the BCLK by 1... just cuz why not?

Joke aside, I guess you can stick to it.

Reasons:

1) Agree, point for Xeon and i7

2) Dude, who gives a fuck, i actually have more respect for people that are tech savy enough to outperform me on a lower budget, but, again, who cares

3) and 4) Solid points for the Xeon

So, i think you already made your choice, you want a xeon and i guess since it's not that common you want aproval, the way i see it, between a locked i7 and xeon, regardless the gen as long they are close enough, the xeon simply wins for being almost exactly the same for a lower price tag. And a 380 (Partcularly the nitro, fucking beautiful card) is perfect for 1080p.

The reason I wanted the Nitro so badly! Even if a 280X is faster I like the Nitro way better.

I was mostly happy with my GTX 760, but the 2GB VRAM sucked in GTA V, I ran out of VRAM before I could actually use the card;s performance, and I wanted a bit more FPS in BF4 and stuff, so the 380 was the way to go for me. That and if I sell my 760 for $120 and my laptop for $120 I can get it, so I don't have to do any saving up.

Assuming you're getting the 4 gig version.

EDIT

My bad, just realized the nitro only comes with 4 gigs
