GPU choice

Go to solution Solved by amp88,

Depends how long you think you'll wait before going 4K. If it's more than, say, 2 years you might be better off getting a 970 now and upgrading to whatever is available in 2 years for roughly the same price as a 980/980 Ti now. You'll pay more in total, but you'll ultimately have a better 4K gaming experience, because the 980 Ti isn't going to get any faster than it is now, but the same money in 2 years time should get a decent performance boost. The 970 should do you pretty well at 1080p for now, if you can cope with decreasing some settings in more demanding titles.

HI,

i am currently picking parts for my first build and really don't know what gpu to chose

here are the ones i am looking at:

- r9 290x

- r9 390x (is the extra memory worth?)

-Gtx 970

-Gtx 980

-Gtx 980 ti (how much a difference vs the 980)

also does the manufacturer make a lot of difference?

ill be using the pc mainly for gaming ( i have a 1080p monitor now but planning to upgrade when 4k is cheaper)

thanks

If you plan to go 4K a 980Ti would be the best option otherwise I would chose a 390X

For 4k I would either choose the 390x or 980 Ti, although the 390x will be a little better due to the larger memory amount and memory. I would personally get the 980 Ti just because it will run a little cooler and will use less power, but that's just my preference.
