WordPress Multisite Shenanigans

I have a rather unusual situation...

 

I have developed a plugin which loads 10GB+ of images into WordPress (its a real-estate plugin, dont ask). My company has decided they want it to work on multisite as well as single site, but the only way to make it work on multisite is to replicate all media to all media libraries accross the entire site.

 

This becomes a problem, if a client has 50+ sites (and some of ours do). This means almost 500GB of images, and of that, 90% of it is just copies and replicas.

 

My question:

Is it possible to link a child-sites media libraries to the main sites library? And if so, how?
