Why are Raptor drives soooooo expensive in 2015?

I own two and I absolutely love them so much! One is 70GB's from a decade ago but I still refuse to throw it away even though I'll never use it again.

 

I have a 1TB one in my AMD build right now and I'm thinking of buying another for Raid 0. That was until I seen that they are still the exact same price as they were three years ago...I can get two Hybrid drives for less than one Raptor drive and they are actually slightly faster with the very smallest of gaps. Why are Raptor drives still so damn expensive?

New or used?

Because I doubt their production process has changed in any way, since SSDs replaced them 

So, unlike regular HDDs, no new innovations? 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Brand new. They are still $250 which is only $50 cheaper than it was almost three years ago. I get they are of the highest quality ever but that just seems like so much. Sadly people like me will pay that just for the looks of them :/

They do break a lot, more almost I'd say in my experience, and yes, very loud. 

But fast for mechanical hdds.

Some people think so but honestly they seem very quiet compared to standard HDD's to me. Pretty sure it has to do with the black anti vibration stuff are around them. They are extremely fast too. Pretty much exactly the same as Hybrids but higher build quality. Not saying Hybrids have poor build quality btw, they are great. Just saying that Raptor drives seriously are tanks haha.

Really are expensive though when you can get the other for a 3rd of the price.

Enterprise grade, not produced/sold in large quantities, not in great demand these days. They essentially don't make sense to buy any more.

Saying that, I also had a pretty good experience with them - partly because of their performance (I RAID 0'd two 74GB Raptors for my desktop build in 2008) and partly because the 5 year warranty meant that when one of them died in 2012 I got a 150GB Velociraptor as an RMA replacement. Good times.

Have personally never seen or had one die on me. My decade old one still works great. Btw did you screw yours down or use tooless mounting? With tooless mounting they are very loud but in my experience if you tighten them with screws they are pretty quiet.
