I was asked by a friend of mine who gave me the fund to build his PC and he was concerned about asking for manufacturer refund if something happens. I couldn't give him a more definite answer and I wanted to know from the community. What constitutes as a defect that may occur along the road and if it's still under warranty/returns acceptable?

Barely overclocking? Overheating? Micro-stutter? Artifact?

Overheating at stock clocks/ fan curves, and artifacts will likely constitute a refund/ replacement, however overclocking and micro stutter usually isnt covered (micro stutter is generally driver/ software based anyways)

Basically those 3. Warranties don't cover overclocking or lack thereof.

So if it's bought brand new, and say we get into a scenario of OC'ing but the card wouldn't even handle +25MHz OC. That's not covered by the warranty? Say, what if the GPU is top of the line, like a Kingpin, HoF, Lightning or G1?

Some companies allow you to do it and if it becomes damaged they help you with it. But being a poor overclocker doesn't mean they'll let you rma it.

no, but you can always try to make up a cover up story like it didn't fit your chasis or it didn't work with your power supply and return it for full refund, then re-buy it later

I would sure hope they'll some what guaranty that their high end card will OC sufficiently enough for having such high price tag.
