Hey all, I was going to get my last name changed today, I had a court hearing and all. Apparently we were missing a document so the judge wouldn't hear our case. First a little background:

I was born in Russia, my mom alone took care of me until I was three years old when my the person who is now my dad flew all the way to Russia to visit (online dating or something, who would've guessed) and we moved to the States. First off, I never met my biological father, I never wanted to, I never remembered anything about him. I assume it was divorce or something but I don't ask because it's awkward and I honestly don't care. I love my dad, he and my mom are the ones who raised me and cared for me. I'm 16 now, and my parents (my mother, and who I consider my father) asked me if I wanted to change my last name to theirs since I am old enough to make smart decisions. The thing is I was born with my biological father's name, and my mother had the same last name as me. That is until she got married to my dad when we moved the States, and she took my dad's last name, but that doesn't apply to me so I still have the same last name. Of course I agreed, and we filed to get my last name changed.

THIS IS WHERE I NEED HELP:

So to help with the hearing, my mom wants me to write a letter on why I want to get my last name changed. I know why I want to, I just can't put it down on paper for some reason. I want to because they raised me up and it's only fair that I carry their last name, plus my old one is so hard to pronounce and after 16 years of people trying to pronounce it in school it's getting really bothersome. The thing is, I need to extend what I just said a write a short letter. How do I put an introduction to the letter? Do I put 'Your Honor,' or something? Do I have to sound formal? Does it have to be a completely serious reason? I mean some guy got his name changed to 'They' for god's sake. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, and feel free to ask anymore questions, hopefully it doesn't get too awkward. I know it's a tech forum, but they met each other with email so I guess it counts as tech. Thanks again!

Edit: The missing document wasn't actually missing, my biological father agreed to give all rights over me to my mother, but it was in Russian so my mom translated it. Apparently this is a no-no because she's a party of interest and could manipulate the document (even though she didn't). Good thing she's a VP at a translation company, so she can get it interpreted in no time!

I have it all figured out now, take a read if you're interested!

I've had my last name changed several times. From my birth fathers name, to my mothers maiden name, and then to my step fathers name.

Wishing leads to ambition and ambition leads to motivation and motivation leads to me building an illegal rocket ship in my backyard.

If you want something to be legal then a solicitor will help. He could help you with the wording and give you advice on how to go forward.

I got it, it should be fine. The judges here are really finicky about documents so my mom wants everything to be there just in case the judge won't want to hear our case.

Is it easy? Do you have to say anything during the hearing?

Considering I was like 5-7 it was pretty easy. I can't remember much but I think they ask you a question or two. You basically only have to agree. I remember the judge was nice. I got a limited edition dollar coin from him.

No nothing like that. It's a simple thing really.
