I've been doing a lot of virus removals these days, so I thought it would be convenient to install a bunch of diagnostic tools on a USB stick. 

Here are some of the apps I already installed:

Are there any other apps I should install?

Probably chuck some file recovery software on there just in-case it's needed. SoftPerfect also has a handy collection portable of software you might find useful.

Nice kit.  I really approve of the AV choice, you won't believe how much crap my Clamwin has already found on PCs that had just completed an AVG/Avira/Avast/MSE/Kaspersky scan.

 

Here's a few more things I have in mine. 

 

7zip portable (never had to use it, but if you need to download an archive while fixing a PC, being able to open any format can come in handy)

CCleaner portable

CD Burner XP Portable (you never know when you'll need to burn a CD or mount an ISO on a PC that is so borked that it can't even do that anymore)

Crystal Disk Info + HDtune Portable (to check for HDD errors, of course, it doesn't always have to be a virus that's causing the PC to go nuts)

Daphne Process Manager Portable (for when a virus locks you out of the regular task manager)

File Assassin Portable (kills and deletes almost any file regardless of system protection or even if it's in use, this is a VERY dangerous tool if you're not careful)

Hardware Monitor Portable

Recuva Portable

SpyDLL Remover Portable (I usually run this after Spybot, in case that one missed something)

 

Also be sure to read the guide I wrote earlier on how to partition your USB stick so you can run a bootable Linux from the same stick.  

If you have a Linux partition on there with a persistent file, you can add an antivirus to that which will allow you to fix PCs that have a Windows which is so dirty that it doesn't even boot anymore.

There should be enough of a choice in AV programs on Linux to get you started.  I prefer ClamAV myself.

Don't forget benchmarking tools, they can be really helpful when trying to diagnose a hardware issue.

To be honest, I generally get it off of P2P sites and match the hash, but I think they fixed their super slow download speeds from the actual site now.

I never tried to reduce the partition size on a stick, I just delete it because depending on where Explorer put the files when you copied them onto the stick, you may or may not be able to reduce it enough for a Linux with persistent file (the persistent file is very important if you plan to put an antivirus on there). 

 

Personally I'd advise to copy the contents of your stick to the desktop for a moment, then copy everything back once you're done.  The first real step in the guide is to delete the existing partition, which means the contents will be gone entirely.
