I want to clone my 1tb HDD (only 50gb used) to my new 250gb SSD.  So I need clone software that allows for different drive sizes.

Any recommendations for a good cloning software that can do this? (free would be ideal)

Thanks

EaseUS Disk Copy Home is free, and easy to use, I'd recommend giving that a shot:

Last time I used EaseUS it didn't copy over the MBR, but it's easier than clonezilla. All you'd have to do is open command prompt in admin, find out the drive letter of the SSD, and do bootsect /nt60 DriveLetterHere

EaseUS does in fact copy over the MBR.

I use it daily to clone HDD's from one size to another, or from a master drive to an unpartitioned drive, etc.

I've never once had issues. Perhaps you were using an old version?

FYI Clonezilla would be very bad in this scenario, since it will not allow you to clone a bigger HDD to a smaller HDD - unless you use something like GParted to shrink the partition first, which is an unnecessary complication to the process.

Another option is Macrium Reflect, free for personal use.  I've easily cloned my boot drive to another drive for backup already, and replaced the laptop HDD with an SSD for one of my clients.
