A new network setup...

Go to solution Solved by ionbasa,

Hello...I'm having a bit of a network problem (or at least I think I am)

Preface:

I recently purchased an Asus RT-AC66W wireless router to replace my Asus RT-N56U. However, instead of just using the RT-AC66W as my wireless router I connected my old RT-N56U in AP mode, which involved running ethernet through my house, which in hindsight would have been a lot easier if that was accomplished during the construction of the house. I chose this configuration because I would like to have my Asus RT-AC66W as my wireless router that communicates to the cable modem and to service wifi in the upstairs/downstairs West portion of my house and the RT-N56U to service wifi to the upstairs/downstairs East portion of my house. This way the wifi converge of my network is more spread out and covers more areas.

Problem:

My secondary Asus router in AP Mode is broadcasting both a 2.4ghz and 5ghz SSID's which is fine and dandy. My concern is that my RT-AC66W is only broadcasting a 2.4ghz SSID and not the 5ghz. So my West portion of my house is not receiving great 5ghz reception from the RT-N56U located downstairs. I have two questions regarding this phenomenon: 1. Does the fact that I have my RT-N56U running in AP mode affects the ability of my RT-AC66W to broadcast 5ghz? 2. Is there setting in the web management system of the routers that I am overlooking that is causing this issue? And how do I fix this?

Additional Information (not sure if this is that helpful but might as well mention it):

  • Modem is a Motorola SurfBoard  SB6141 with Firmware:SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM03-NOSH
  • Asus RT-AC66W is running firmware: 3.0.0.4.376_3861
  • Asus RT-N56U is running firmware: 3.0.0.4.374_5656

The wireless settings on my RT-AC66W are as follows:

Operation Mode: Wireless Router

Frequency:.................................................5ghz

SSID:...........................................................MeatNPotatoesWest (This is the SSID that is isn't broadcasting and can't be connected to)

Hide SSID:...................................................No

Any help to why the 5ghz band on my RT-AC66W isn't broadcasting will be greatly appreciated.

I have the RT-AC66R. Here are a few things to consider:

Under the 5GHz frequency, set your channel bandwidth to "20/40/80" You have it set at 40 currently, maybe your device don't support that big of a channel band?

Also, make sure the 5Ghz radio is enabled:
