Hey guys,

So here's the deal. This is an MSI refurbished GTX 580 Twin Frozr II and since I've had it for a while, one of the fans has gone out and my temps have rocketed to an excess of 100c which is far too high obviously. It also don't help that I live in the desert so this is quite an issue as it's been exacerbated so easily. Anyways I dust my computer out regularly with compressed air and also reapply thermal paste regularly with arctic silver 5 (old school I know) and it doesn't quite help enough. I've even removed my case components to give the PC as much fresh air as possible with fans in my room. Helps, but I don't want to have to do that. No overclocking, etc.

So my question for you all, would be, if I am to replace my heatsink shroud on my graphics card, what should I replace it with? I don't currently have a liquid cooler radiator, so I can't use that NZXT liquid cooler doo-dad thingy. I don't want it to take up too much space, because I have been thinking about grabbing another 580, but I certainly wouldn't with these kind of temperatures.

OR, do I just replace the fan on the current heatsink?

Let me know your overall thoughts. I can also provide pictures of my setup if need-be.

Go on E bay, Amazon or whatever and you will be sure to find a GTX 580 heat sink. Also think about if two GTX 580's will do the job considering they both use a lot of power and output a lot of heat so maybe consider buying a GTX 970 or something.

Probably not even worth salvaging. You could probably pick up a more modern used card that would provide higher performance and power efficiency.

Regular reapplications of TIM are not necessary, not unless you mean every 6 months or so. That being said the Twin Frozer cooler was one of the best available for the 580 so if that cant keep it cool then your options are

1. Extreme air cooler(aftermarket)

2. Watercooling

3. Getting a different card.

Personally I think 3 would be the best option as you cant even keep one cool right now so trying to keep two cool would be impossible.

How hot does it get?

My 560 reaches 90 now that I've OC-ed it.

try and see if you can get just the cooler from a similar pcb 580 if you dont have the $$ to drop on a new modern card.  I just got one actually (few years late lol) because my cousin was cleaning out his closet and I threw it in my system yesterday just for curiosity's sake and I was rather impressed with the performance!  I had to make the reference style blower scream to keep it under 80c while gaming but it did it ok. check ebay and whatnot for coolers or cheap cards even. and if @Gofspar says it needs delidded then he's probably right.

You need to delid it, 580 and older had a IHS on the GPU die, the TIM under the IHS is dryed out.

You forgot to mention possible ramifications of attempting such an act, you know that whole "killing your hardware" part.

Yes by regular reapplications I mean every Summer or so. It gets hot here.

102 Celsius, resulting in failure

Never heard of a GTX 580 being de-lidded, but if that's a serious reply, then I would consider it.

@Sirslicey

Watecooling would be your best option, really.

Or a new GPU.

look into one of those AIO GPU coolers, maybe that'll work better and not cost so much
