Resolution, graphic settings or refresh rate?

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying one of those 1440p 144Hz monitors.

 

But my struggle is that even with a 980ti / Fury X / Titan X, I'll never be able to get 144fps on max settings with AAA games.

So what should I sacrifice ?

Go for something inbetween, especially if you're going to be using a GSync monitor. Don't use an FPS counter, just adjust settings until you're happy with how it feels, that's the best way to decide on settings IMO. (would stick with 1440P though, if you were playing at 1080p, you may as well just get a 1080p monitor)

Sacrifice FPS , capped it at 60 FPS if you can .

Depends on what your goal is and for what game. Personally for FPS games I would go 1080-1440/144fps but for simcity 1440/45-60fps.

Shouldn't even be a debate. Running at super low at 1440p does you no good.

In that case, there's no point getting a freesync/gsync monitor. I read many times that playing at >100fps with the proper sync feels amazing...

It's good to know that there might be a compromise. I should mention that I'm not 100% sure about which monitor I'm getting yet, I was looking at the 1440p 144Hz ones because I've read many great things about them and I feel like it's time to move on from 1080p.

Acer's XB270HU would be my choice. I'm planning on using it instead of my current XB280HK for gaming, I think I'd prefer the higher refresh rates and IPS over 4K, for gaming at least.
