Question about OS when switching hardware

Go to solution Solved by ThE_MarD,

Heyyo,

Yep! Windows might as you to reactivate windows. If it gives you an error with your product key? Just click the change product key and make sure it's typed in correctly. If you still have a problem? Select the Phone activation and call that number and follow the on screen prompts for numbers to input and stuff.

If that doesn't work and it forwards you to a customer support agent? At most just say you upgraded your hardware and that your product key is only used on this one PC. They'll do some stuff on their end to probably deactivate the old genuine validation and then set up this one with you and give you a bunch of numbers to put in a few boxes and you're done.

I've had to do this a few times even on PC repairs when I was still a computer technician.

So when I get my new motherboard and processor I guess I will not be able to use my current windows 7 key right? well if I phone Microsoft telling them that I am doing a hardware swap will they allow it? also if I do a fresh install of windows but i have already activated windows 10 will i still get to use it?

As long as it's not an OEM key. If it is, then you'd have to do some more stuff.

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.
