Hi guys.

I know this is well ahead but I plan on going to Comic-Con next year and I want to get a boatload of footage with my GoPro (it'll be my first time!). The thing is, I do not have a laptop to transfer data from my micro SD's to my external hard drive and I would really prefer not to get one if possible. What I do have is a Samsung Galaxy tablet. Would I be able to hook it up to a USB hub, connect my external hard drive, Micro SD, and transfer my files like that? I don't have the necessary peripherals to try and see if it works or not. If I do have to or would be much better off with a laptop, which one would you recommend I get? I don't plan on editing the footage as soon as I get it. I just want to save the footage for editing later. I don't go to a lot of LAN parties and most of my mobile computing is done either on my phone or tablet, so I don't really see the need for a laptop. I really appreciate the help.

If I were you, I'd just get a butt-tonne of micro-SD cards.

That's not a bad idea. The thing that makes me think twice about it is the cost that it may translate to. If I buy a whole lot of micro SD cards, I'll have to get more batteries for both my gimbal and my camera to be able to capture more and make optimal use of them. That, plus, I don't want to carry anything too excess on the comic con floor. I also plan on being in costume and I don't really want to have any extra baggage so I don't ruin the aesthetics. What I'm really trying to get at is that I want to have a balance of optimal use for everything. The plan is to have a handful of micro SD's, gopro batteries, handheld gimbal batteries, my gopro head mount for if my gimbal batteries are used up, a battery bank just incase anything, and my handheld gimbal. As of right now, that will all fit inside the pockets of my planned costume just fine. I think if I get anything more, I'm pretty sure I would have to get a small bag to organize everything. Given, it's not a HUGE compromise but it's something I would really like to avoid. I also know that comic con can be super crowded, so the less volume I take up, the better I can navigate through crowds.

Yes, it will show up in the folder on your tablet /mnt/sdcard or /mnt/sdcard0 depends

Only problem though is the speed will be atrocious so yano

Also, an SD card reader literally costs like £5 so if you lose it, no big loss.

Any idea of the read/write speeds? Is it something I can leave running, come back in a fairly reasonable amount of time, and have it finished? Or is it something I have to leave on overnight?

USB 2.0 maximum is about 60MB/s. Some super high speed (and price) Micro-SD cards can match and even exceed that but the basic Class 10 cards do about 10-30MB/s. The external drive will probably cap at 60MB/s. So the bottleneck will probably be the card. For example 8GB at 30MB/s is 4min and 33 sec. This is all very theoretical. The video compression will probably make a huge difference. Could you do a test run with a huge video file? To make sure there should be a lot of movement in the video. If you leave it sitting filming at still scenery, it'll compress well and move faster than a video with a lot of action would.

In any case, since the cards are slow and the USB is slow, I don't think the machine you use for the transfer makes a drastic difference speed-vice. Unless you can ramp everything up to USB 3.0.
