Is there any difference other than price tag between the MSI reference 980ti and the EVGA reference 980ti (just 2 examples). Everyone just seems to be selling the same thing with a different box and price

Would you rather have looks over performance, longer lifespan and quieter operation?

Only real reason to go for a reference is if you want to vent the hot air out the back of the case, or lack quality airflow in your case. In which case a non-reference will be hurling warm air around inside the case.

Or if you want to use liquid cooling on the cards.

The airflow in my Air 240 isnt fantastic. i just have 2 slow speed fans in the front and one fan at the top so better ambient temps could be good. i just think the reference designs look amazing but also there is a lot of space restriciton on gpu width. i cant go for any wide cards because the power connectors push against my case window :/

Heyyo,

The reference cards have bad price to performance.

Get a non reference.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_980_Ti_Gaming/18.html

GTA V, 2560x1440...

MSI reference GTX 980 Ti = $649.98 and gets 62.8 fps... so $10.35 per fps

MSI Gaming GTX 980 TI = $679.99 71.9fps... so $9.46 per fps

without overclock? The reference GTX 980 Ti has higher price to performance yes.

Now let's check overclocked:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_980_Ti_Gaming/33.html

MSI Reference GTX 980 Ti = $649.98 and gets 102.6fps... so $6.34 per fps.

MSI Gaming GTX 980 Ti = $679.99 and gets 130.5fps... so $5.21 per fps.

Essentially... it depends how much money ya wanna throw at it. Reference cards do cost less sure, but depending on your goals with the card? The reference design isn't terrible. It's cheaper, has better custom liquid cooling compatibility and works better in smaller cases due to restricted airflow and the blower style pushing the hot air out the back of the case instead of non-reference coolers which vents the hot air into the case.

Is there any difference other than price tag between the MSI reference 980ti and the EVGA reference 980ti (just 2 examples). Everyone just seems to be selling the same thing with a different box and price

No there isn't any usually. EVGA's "superclocked" is the reference card with slightly higher clock speeds... that's usually the only difference between them. That? and depending what manufacturer? warranty can vary too depending where you live.

Heyyo,

The custom PCB's usually add more power delivery which can result in higher overclocks yes. Of course, that only matters if you want to overclock.

The MSI Gaming GTX 980 Ti has different modes. Even the stock OC mode has decent performance yeilds if you don't feel like pushing the card too hard.

Another one to check? Gigabyte Gaming GTX 980 Ti. It's pretty much just as good tbh. See which card has a lower asking price between the two and you'd be happy.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_980_Ti_Gaming/33.html

As you can see here? The Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 Ti actually slightly beat the MSI Gaming overclock.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_980_Ti_Gaming/34.html

It also, probably thanks to the third fan operates cooler.

so gigabyte g1 gaming kinda the best 980ti out there right now?

how about evga kingpin? heard about it broke some 3dmark record or something like that.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/kngpn-and-evga-break-3dmark-records-with-four-geforce-gtx-980-at-2ghz/

That was with the EVGA GTX 980s EVGA K|NGP|N editions. Notice he's definitely not using the normal cooler lol as he's using a liquid cooling solution. :P

Also... the K|NGP|N Edition is damn expensive... it's not worth it unless you're trying to set records tbh.

http://www.evga.com/articles/00944/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-980-Ti-KINGPIN/

I can't even find that 3DMark result with the EVGA GTX 980 Ti K|NGP|N Edition... I'm sure it is possible for 2GHz on the core clock much like the GTX 980 Classifieds... but that's with liquid cooling and stuff lol.

All of the 980ti Kingpin records are only on 1x gpu's no one has made a 4 way sli 980ti Kingpin system yet (im sure well see alot though [ 980ti ran a freaking 29880 graphics score solo on firestrike normal]) also the clock speed reported by 3dmark was 1724 so that could be boosting into the 1900s.

Do not go for a 980ti kingpin unless you want serious watercooling or even LN2 cooling otherwise youre just straight overpaying for something that pretty much every other 980ti non reference can get close to. i personally have a 980 ti g1 gaming and love it, you might get some coil whine with them though, mine is pretty hard to hear and is usually drowned out by fans.
