Need Help Choosing Motherboard

Go to solution Solved by Loe,

Looks like I will go with the MSI H87m-g43 or the ASUS H87m-E (if I buy both wireless and sound card)

I am looking for a µATX motherboard that is socket 1150. I want to have an i7 4770, gigabyte 770 and dual channel 16gb ram. I also want an accessible pcie 1x slot for a wifi card.

EDIT :: Forgot to mention I have no interest in overclocking.

I have been looking at boards across 3 chipsets.

I initially was wanted the Asus B85m-g

Then the Msi H87m-g43

And finally the Msi Z87m-g43

I am just getting confused as to which chipset to get.

Another board I was looking at was the H87m-E.

What I want to know is what motherboard you think is best for my use case scenario.

Motherboard: MSI H87M-G43 Case: Fractal Design Define R4

SSD: 840 Evo 250gb, 512gb MX100 GPU: MSI GTX 980TI Gaming Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo

It won't be, adding line I missed out.

The msi boards are the same except for the chipset. I would get the H87 as you won't overclock and the H87 is good feature wise board. The B85 chipset is aimed more for business or OEMs.

if you haven't already bought it, get the 4670k if you want to save money or the 4770k if you want to video edit

I was leaning more towards that one at the moment, the msi one. Currently in my saved part list on pcpartpicker.

if you don't mind me asking, why not? for a small amount of money you can get more power out of your cpu.

It costs more money, paranoia, looks like a lot of effort.

If you want a high quality micro ATX motherboard, you'll have to ditch the extra PCIe slot and use the on-board mPCIe WiFi controller (what more can you want from a board this size) - ASUS Maximus VI Impact Socket 1150. Definite recommend. As for a case, I've yet to find a decent micro ATX specific case. You could hit up a 350D, it's mATX downwards compatible.

Do you mean gene? That is their mini ITX board.

paranoia? :D

if you don't want to overclock you don't have to but if you ever want to or if you need more power you have that option

it's not difficult and the extra price is worth it. :)

If he doesn't want to overclock don't bager him to. Looking at other H87 boards that msi one looks to be the best one.

Yep, paranoia, everything will explode and I will die. I will consider it.

Discard what I said :D misread the initial post. Given that, switch up the Impact with the Gene basically, absolutely. I've got that current configuration, simply amazing.

I like the look of the gene, the extra cost of the board sounds justified if it does have wifi (does it?) and I won't need to invest in a soundcard.

Also will have the ability to run multi gpu setups if I wanted to.

Still a bit expensive but I shall think about it.

The Gene has an mPCIe Combo card which has WiFi built in without the need for a dedicated PCIe card. It came with my board, but I never used it .. hooked my shit up to ethernet instead. Yes, there are two PCIe slots that support multi GPU setups, although I have one in my board currently. I'd be fine with the mini ITX Impact to be honest  do think, tis amazing.

I really want to buy the gene purely because it makes no sense, £160 motherboard, £34 case (n200, already bought)

Just get a cheaper mobo with cheap dedicated sound and wifi cards...

Onboard audio has nothing on even a cheap dedicated sound card.
