First off, I wasn't sure where to put this because I am meaning components in general (CPU, RAM, Video card, MoBo etc...)

I was wondering if there are any tips or things to look out for when buying 2nd hand PC components from sites such as Gumtree, eBay, Craigslist etc... that could help myself and others like myself who are looking to maybe buy components 2nd hand.

I know to ask about CPU's and GPU's being overclocked but the person could easily lie. Also I have seen people on eBay listing their items saying what 80 + proficiency PSU that they were using with their components.

Thanks,

Paddy.

It's usually a hit or miss. Always depends on the rating of the seller

eBay is really not the place to shop. So many scams happen there, it's unbelievable. I would go for Amazon, and look at their used products. They always have a wide variety in a massive range of conditions, and plus it's all completely safe. It's almost impossible to get scammed on Amazon, and if you do get scammed, you can file a claim and it'll be solved immediately.

Yeah. I have been played around with on eBay before by a dealership that sell PC components. I was thinking about more local things, like someone that lives close so that I can take the bus/train there to check out the item and if it doesn't work or isn't up to my expectations I can just walk away. I have seen a few cheap video cards for sale on Gumtree within 100 miles of myself. Most look well looked after with boxes, anti-static bags, adapters and useless driver disc. I was mainly wondering if there was any main downfalls apart from having to warranty buying second hand.

Yeah. I was looking on the closest thing to CraigsList we have in the UK called Gumtree and there are some amazing deals, but I'm not sure if they will be as they seem.

I normally look on /r/hardwareswap (reddit)

I only recommend picking up a used cpu, gpu, ram(I actually highly recommend everyone buys used ram), cooling(fans, watercooling aio's ect.)

I DO NOT RECCOMEND you buy cases, mobos, psu's or storage used.

I bought my CPU 2nd hand but it was still in it's box sealed for half of the price it was worth. I am currently looking to get a 2nd hand video card because I will not be able to afford a new current generation card.
