windows 10, file explorer won't open

pretty self explanatory, the upgrade went beautifully but my file explorer "opens" but the window doesn't show up on my desktop. previews of it render, though.

any help?

Did you have any apps like Classic Shell, Start8, or anything else that modifies explorer.exe before upgrading?

The problem is your display setthing switched to extend the display, it assume you have multiple display, so it's displaying file explore on 2nd display. To resolve this issue, go to display setting, advanced display setting, change the multiple display to show only on 1, apply.

  • 4 months later...

Your advice was spot on buggy2k! I had just moved house, and had not connected my second display up. As soon as I did, and loaded Explorer, it popped straight up! I would never have put two and two together if it wasn't for your post, and was about ten minutes away from reinstalling Windows 10. Thankyou for saving me a lot of time!

If you see the File explorer window, but the content is empty, it is because Windows is waiting for a drive to respond.

-> It could be a SATA driver issue. Make sure you install the latest SATA drivers for your SATA controller

-> It could be you have a maps networked drives that File Explorer can't connect to, so you have to wait for it to time out (if you have multiple of them, you'll need to wait longer)

-> A drive is not responding (faulty SATA cable, or not connected properly, or the drive is busted). This can also happen with USB external drives, and USB flash drives.
