Messed up BIOS

Go to solution Solved by Taipeek,

So I flashed the newer version of BIOS and the result is the same.

I blame the graphics card and I dont think there is any way i can fix this by myself.

He was a great high-end notebook back in his day and now his watch is ended.

So thank you all, guys, for your suggestions and replies. I very appreciate it  :)

Hi,

I recently got this notebook from a friend for diagnosis... this notebook is in bad state and I am well aware of that.

I went to BIOS to change boot order to reinstal os from USB drive and the BIOS looked like this.

post-2431-0-02797200-1375383503_thumb.jp

The seetings is surprisingly working :D

My question is: Can this be fixed in some way like reflashing the BIOS somehow or is the notebook dead?

Thanks in advance for your reply and suggestions. :)

Either the BIOS is corrupted or the GPU is faulty.

Most probably a flash gone wrong.

Well that would sound reasonable but nobody tried to flash anything on this notebook, actually this model even never got BIOS update possibility.

I suspect the graphics since I am able to boot into Windows but can't manage to set the drivers for graphics properly and it work only in 800x600 but there is no glitchyness like in the BIOS which is wierd.

Maybe Windows is using GPU emulation/CPU rendering or what ever its called? Then the GPU would be disabled and you normally can't go any higher than 600x800 (at least in XP if i remember right)

What's the manufacture and model of the laptop? (Even if its just a no name Clevo OEM PC)

That sounds interesting. I didn't know that the emulation is posible. It's HP compaq 8510w, it has nvidia quadro mobile graphics card in it...

As I said i don't know the name for it. But windows has some kind of built in GPU driver or renders the graphics with the CPU or something. That will give a video signal but is so slow that even if you could do anything over 600x800 it would be so slow that it would be useless. (This happened to my old Clevo M5X0V based laptop because the GPU driver wasn't installed)

BTW about finding a BIOS it seams that HP does still have at support page for your laptop:

Thanks! I've already known about the support page but selected Win 7 x64 and there is no BIOS download... heh, support these days :/

I'll try to flash the BIOS tomorow.

eh... have you tried flashing it to an older version and have you tried removing the gpu and putting it back in

"One does not simply remove the GPU in a laptop,,

You could try the oven method though i fixed a HP DV9500 that way... it failed 1 month after :(

Then i did it again... One month after. And the i tried a third time at i gave it too much time in the oven, so i destroyed it with a hammer :D (Rest in pieces DV9500)

But i have seen a HP 8510w or a very similar machine form the same time (Core 2 due, Quadro graphics, same size and construction) Very nice laptop sad to see it end like this :(

Very few laptops has a removable GPU (well laptops that uses AMD APUs have in the way that its on the CPU)

Its a lot more likely than not that you can't remove the GPU in you laptop

What was the laptop that you had?

True (why did i forgot this?) But the wouldn't you also experience issues in windows?

But trying to run Memtest86+ can't hurt.

Hmm not always. A friend of mine owns a server that has the same issue in the BIOS but in server 2003 it doesn't have this issue.

Was the RAM faulty? Or was it another problem?

It was faulty RAM yes. We took out the RAM and replaced it with another and the BIOS returned to normal. But again it MIGHT not be the same problem here.

I dont think the RAM is the issue here... the fact that the notebook monitor havent worked and glowed white for quite some time really points on the graphics... if it was RAM issues I would saw it in windows....

this model is really hard to get opened... once I tried to get inside one HP notebooks, similar construction but older model... I would seriously damage the case if I wanted to get inside...

It seams that "older HP" laptops (about 2008) are built with a million screws and small panels and boards and other stuff.

They are at least build a lot better than newer HP laptops :D (after 2010-11)

i have taken some hp laptops apart and that wasnt very hard and they where almost identical to this one so i would give it a try
