Windows 10

The Ghost

Will I need to have to activate Win10 after the free upgrade or not?

And how can I 100% duplicate my HDD to an other one so I have a backup if the upgrade goes south? Just put both HDDs in, boot with Ubuntu and copy everything over or what?

You can use the included backup utility to create a system image of your system. No, you will not need to activate Windows 10 - it should already be activated once the upgrade process is completed.

You can use CloneZilla. It's based on Debian and works wonders with Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.

Did you not do the Windows 8.1 update?

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

When you do the upgrade using GWX, the HWID of the computer is  sent to Microsoft servers, allowing the Windows to be activated with a generic key. The generic key is applied automatically during Setup when one skips the Product Key input. When one does a clean install, one could skip the product key input again and activate.

For the HDD clone you can use CloneZilla to make a block-level duplicate.

I have a problem. I'm doing the free upgrade from Windows 7, and the files are fully downloaded, I think, but Windows Update told me "you've got an update", so I clicked shut down and install updates.

Now, for almost quarter of an hour, probably, it's sitting on installing update 1 of 1...

What do I do???

Should I take out the CAT5 cable?
