R9 390 Performance Issues

Go to solution Solved by Majestic,

I think your CPU is locked at 800mhz or something. Check if speedstepping is enabled, and windows is set to balanced.

I just bought a Sapphire Nitro r9 390 and it is terrible. I am gaming at 1080p, maxed out settings and I am getting an average of 30 frames per second and an occasional max of 40 frames per second. This is ridiculous as my r9 290 gamed at these same settings and achieved 60 frames per second without breaking a sweat. I tried GTA V, Valley benchmark, Heaven Benchmark, TERA.

I have downloaded all the recent drivers uninstalled all old ones with DDU. I have tried changing PCie 16x slots. I have tried using different power cables. I have removed OC on my cpu. I am all out of ideas. I am sure nothing hardware related is bottlenecking this card. Someone please help, I have no idea what to do! :(

My system specifications are:

CPU = i7 4770k 3.9Ghz

RAM = 16Gb DDR3 2133mhz

Motherboard: Asus Maximus Vi Gene

PSU: Corsair RM850 (850 watts)

OS: Windows 8.1

I don't think it's being bottlenecked either so I would assume it's a problem with the drivers. Try using the latest beta drivers and see if there are any performance differences. Also, could it be a problem with your Wi-Fi? If you play online then that could be the issue.

Did you really upgrade from a 290 to a 390?   :huh:

Can you even call it that? Its more like buying the same card twice.

Anyway OP, Tera is not a game you run 60fps all the time and it's def. not GPU reliant. I can run that game 1440p on a 960.

Please run a game and monitor it with MSI Afterburner graphs. Plot out CPU usage, GPU load etc.

Indeed by an ironic coincidence the Wi-Fi actually became a problem today. My adapter decided not to work properly and it is only running at 0.3Mbps. That would explain GTA V and TERA but not valley and Heaven benchmark.

Ok I ran MSI afterburner and yea there is massive fluctuations in GPU usage and Core clock. The Core clock is sitting around 850mhz most of the time and keeps dipping down and up.

no no thats the core clock for the GPU I believe. The CPU is fine, running at 3.9ghz

Should be 3.7 during 4C load, and please verify this with taskmanager or CPU-Z if it's really the case.

Oh you are right it is the CPU core clock. I ran the unigen valley benchmark and I monitored CPUZ and task manager and it was at 800mhz and i saw a peak of 1000mhz. Why is my CPU not moving past this?
