Keyboard Help

Would anyone recommend the Steel Series APEX, (Not the M800), keyboard? The thing is, I'm a moron and I like to buy shiny things, and this thing provides me with that by having R/G/B back lighting. But the problem is that the keyboard is not a mechanical keyboard, and I'm too cheap to dish out another $100 CAD on the M800, which is the mechanical version. So what should I do? Should I buy the shiny none mechanical thing? Or should I buy a less shiny mechanical thing? Could someone also explain to me why mechanical keyboards are better.
