for that GPU 1080p, but if you will upgrade the GPU, I would recommend a 1440p 144Hz TN panel

Early 2019 Build : Ryzen 2600X // Asus Tuff X470 // G.Skill Trident Z RGB 8x2 16GB // MSI RTX 2070 // NZXT H500

Late 2017 Build : Intel i7 8700k // Asus Prime Z370-A // G.Skill Trident Z 8x2 16GB // EVGA GTX 1080 Ti  // NZXT S320 Elite

Late 2015 Build : Intel i7 6700k // Asus Maximus VI Gene Z170 //  Corsair LPX 8x2 16GB // Gigabyte GTX 970 // Corsair Air 240

1440p, even if you get new GPU in the feature you will not be able to handle 4K at enjoyable level. Well ya if you dont game and you will use the monitor on business goals then go truly 4K ( with business goals i mean anything else but not gaming )

It depends on what you doing  > Gaming yes

Little gaming, more other things > No

Ive decided on 1440 IPS.

Ive seen most are 60Hz, will this still be better than my 1080 at 120Hz? (I know ver little about monitors :( )

Havent gotten anything yet. This is a big purchase, a monitor upgrade is less frequent than anything else i need to be smart about it ;)

I play all range of games really. GTA V to Civ 5 to Dirt to Diablo.

The ASUS MG279Q looks really good, but that price tag.

I would look at the MG279Q, that will be the best monitor for your budget at the moment.

1080p with a 290X it wont handle 1440p or 4K

What makes you say it won't handle 1440p? I had an R9 290 on 1440p and that handled Farcry 4 maxed out comfortably.
