I am building a budget pc for my parents. They currently have a pretty old AMD 2.2 GHz quad core, 4gb DDR2 ram, cheap mobo and a dead generic PSU, which is why I decided they should invest in a new PC. After looking around this is the build I have come up with:

PART PICKER

Total: $217.71 from AMAZON

I will be reusing their hard drive, case, cd tray, etc.

This PC will be used for basic web browsing, email, lots of photos, some youtube videos and general programs.

The questions I have are:

1. I read the AMD A8-7600 can be run 3.3/3.8GHz in 65W mode and 3.1/3.3GHz in 45W mode, will this motherboard support putting the cpu in 65W mode? I believe I will do this as soon as I get it just for a bit more performance.

2. Should this be more than enough performance and a good upgrade from what they currently have and what they are going to be doing with it?

3. The AMD A8-7670K just came out and is about $110, would it be worth paying ~$24 more for the performance or is it not worth it?

4. Any problems with this build or recommendations? I am trying to keep it as cheap as possible while showing a lot better performance from what they used to have and they have already agreed that the price is ok.

In the future if needed I could add another 4GB stick of ram and I am considering getting a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD to make everything more snappy. But this is the bare basics I am trying to take care of at the moment.

Any help is appreciated!

[edit] This is what I am debating on currently

Being skeptical of the G3258 route, if I put in around $40-50 more I believe the build will be a bit more solid with an I3 or A-10.

These are the current builds I am debating and I am leaning towards the I3 which sits around $240.

I'd probably look at Intel.

The G3258 in particular, if not the G3220. Both should out perform the processor you chose.

Try and grab 8gb of RAM off of Reddit. It's only $4 more on average.

Do they really need a 250GB SSD?

EHHH i would go with the G3258, its like $30 cheaper and if you overclock it you can get much better performance tbh. Plus the cash you save you can then invest in a basic cheap case or something

I would consider this, I may even save on the motherboard if I went this route. I don't plan on overclocking though and I plan on using the stock cooler. Would the performance difference be much at stock speeds?

you might need a bios update for that CPU to work with that Motherboard.

I looked on the site, according to reviews I should get a Rev. 4 which only has bios FA or FB and FA supports it. I'm confident in flashing the bios if need be though.

I'd also recommend the Intel Pentinum G3258 since it's basic as you can get but still has the potential and has integrated graphics. (By the way the socket is LGA1150)

As for RAM... if anything it sounds like you don't have much focus on aesthetics which means you can probably just go with Crucial RAM. Well.. it just does the job it was meant to do.

Your PSU will most likely work with a compatible motherboard to the Pentinum.

Okay, this is to answer the stock cooler thingy. You can still overclock with stock cooling, just not as much. You'll still definitely see a performance boost though. If you want absolute proof, look at Linus's video on the stuffies... here. In fact, I think you should just use this as your guideline lols.

My mother has a lot of photos and I figure a 250GB should last a while, besides it's $15 difference between 120 and 250. It was just a luxury thing, not needed but if I notice the harddrive being sluggish I was just going to recommend buying one.

Nice seeing multiple recommendations for the G3258 but I am skeptical. To me the Amd still looks like it would perform better and I haven't considered getting a 2 core in years.

I'm up for trying it but I'm still unsure.

Does the type of motherboard I choose determine how well I will be able to overclock? and how high of a clock am I looking at getting with a stock cooler? (Any suggestions in the same price range as the mobo I selected?)

Also, do Intel CPU coolers come with the thermal paste pre-applied or will I need to grab a tube if I go the Intel route?

Don't mean to doubt anyone, just don't want to get it and the PC be running comparable to the current setup they have.

In my opinion when it comes to casual builds that don't have a graphics card I think AMD's apu's are better than much of intel's cpus.

In my opinion you should choose the A10 cpu. People rip on AMD all the time, but they're better in my opinion for simple builds like this

Haha, wow. Yeah if the price difference is that low it'd be foolish to go for the smaller model.

Intels cores are significantly stronger than AMDs cores. Most work loads only use one or two threads, especially the stuff that your parents are likely to use.

You'll be more than fine with a simple dual core chip as strong as the G3258. Especially if you OC it.

Apparently you can get up to 4.5ghz on the stock cooler though I can't imagine it's quiet.

The i3 is also a great choice, it's what I'm going with on my next build.
