Hey I'm looking at putting together a rig for use in my architecture classes. It consists of 3d modeling, rendering, and photo editing. My budget is a little flexible. Somewhere close to $800 maybe. Thanks!

Do you know what CAD software youll be using?

My Rigs:

Gaming/CAD/Rendering Rig
Case:
Corsair Air 240 , CPU: i7-4790K, Mobo: ASUS Gryphon Z97 mATX,  GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970, RAM: G.Skill Sniper 16GB, SSD: SAMSUNG 1TB 840 EVO, Cooling: Corsair H80i PCPP: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/f2TH99SFF HTPC
Case:
Silverstone ML06B, CPU: Pentium G3258, Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H97N-WiFi, RAM: G.Skill 4GB, SSD: Kingston SSDNow 120GB PCPP: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/JmZ8TW

Hi there. I'm building a photo editing / gaming rig right now and I put together this parts list. It might help :)

i5 4690k (3.5GHz 6M-Cache 1150 LGA Quad Core Haswell Processor)

Cooler Master Hyper 212X Evo

Gigabyte GA-Z79X Gaming 5 LGA 1150

2 x G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (total of 16GB of Ram)

Boot Disk: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5” SSD

Storage Disk / Lightroom & Photoshop Scratch Disk Choices: 2 x WD Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5” 7200RPM

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB Windforce Video Card (or Gigabyte R9 390X 8GB. Its price is similar to the GTX 970 in my country)

Fractal Design Define R4 (Titanium) ATX Mid Tower Case

SeaSonic M12II-750 EVO 80Plus Bronze Fully Modular

The GPU is probably overkill for photography but it suits my gaming needs. :) If you need more ram, the mobo can support up to 32GB. I would've gone with an i7 but due to budget constraints I've settled on an i5.

If you're looking for a monitor check out the Dell u2410 (1920 x 1200). It's a great IPS display and the price is hard to beat! I have it and I use it for working with my laptop and gaming with my PS3.

EDIT: Without including the monitor, this should cost around $1350 :)

Looks like a strong build. If he is using it primarily for architecture ect maybe he should just go for the i7 instead even if its a bit more costly.

EDIT: Maybe a GTX 960 or an AMD GPU if he isnt gaming much to lower the costs to account for the i7 upgrade?

Obviously intel is superior in a gaming sense, but the rig wont be used to even look at games haha. Ive read that programs like photoshop unload some work onto GPUs, but that something like a 970 wouldnt really be necessary (much less a 980ti lol). Anyway, when it comes to running programs like these, isnt #of cores/hyperthreading something that is preferred? Price vs. Cost leads me to believe that an AMD 8350 or 9590 w/8 cores (i know its just an overclocked 8350) would be appropriate?

I wish I could answer you but I suspect that a proper GPU will immensely help in creating previews for Photoshop. With regards to processors, I don't think hyperthreading is a must for Adobe products particularly with Photoshop. They prefer physical cores.

man that 6 core is beautiful. Is the CPU cooler up to the task of keeping it cool though? I dont know much about cooler master, but i used a Phanteks ph-tc14pe on a previous build to replace a Corsair closed-loop cooler. Although that was just an H60, a mere pistol compared to the artillery piece that the Phanteks is.

It can, but you can change the cooler to an aio or any other you like, since your budget is around 1500

Try to get the Design Fractal Define R5 (titanium color is gorgeous) which is only a few bucks more expensive. I only picked R4 for my build because that's the only one available. Since the build he made is under your budget, get some Noctua case fans. :)
